MEDINA, Ohio —A house fire in northeast Ohio has killed a 7-year-old boy and sent his mother and four siblings to the hospital.

A fire dispatcher in Medina says the other family members were all treated for minor smoke inhalation early Monday and then released. Fire officials say a Medina police officer suffered minor injuries when ran into the burning home to rescue the 7-year-old. The officer also was released from a hospital after being treated.

Investigators don’t yet know what caused the fire, reported just after midnight in the community about 25 miles southwest of Cleveland. Medina 2nd Assistant Fire Chief Mark Crumley tells WKYC-TV that he saw a smoke detector in the house, but it had no batteries.
