UPDATE: A man talks about his frightening experience after a bullet came flying through his home.
COLUMBUS, Ohio—A man continued to recover after a bullet came flying through his Southeast Side home’s exterior wall late Tuesday.
The bullet came within a fraction of an inch of killing 24-year-old Edward Downing.
NBC 4’s Tom Brockman talked with Edward and his mother, Brenda, who shared their frightening story.
Edward wore a bandage on his right ear. It was a visual reminder of when a bullet came through the wall of his Remington Ridge Road home.
He was eating dinner when he heard a pop.
Brenda said Edward was sitting at the counter when he yelled that something hit him.
“At the time, I thought something was just lodged in my ear because when I was holding it, it just felt like something was just in it,“ Edward said.
Edward didn’t realize what had happened until his brother found something on a chair: A bullet. And a bullet hole in the side wall.
“The cops said it was a .45,“ Edward said.
He said if the bullet were going any faster or hit him differently, the outcome could have been much worse than the four stitches he has in his ear..
Edward was transported to Grant Medical Center in stable condition but with a graze wound to his ear.
“I mean if it wasn’t for the wall, I’d probably be dead,“ Edward said.
Edward remained confused about how a bullet ended up going through a side of his home that doesn’t face the street.
Columbus police said it was unclear whether the bullet was fired intentionally into the home or if it were a stray bullet from another shooting.
CPD has not made any arrests in the case. If you have information, you’re urged to call Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-645-TIPS.
