COLUMBUS, Ohio—An apartment was damaged severely and residents were evacuated during an apparent grease fire Monday morning.
Nalene Jenkins and her husband, Dion Jenkins, were inside their apartment at 2193 Parkville Ct. , located at the Trinity Square Apartments on the city’s Northeast Side.
Nalene told NBC 4 they were alerted to a fire in the apartment by their smoke detectors just after 10 a.m. Monday morning.
Columbus fire was called to the scene.
It is believed Dion turned on the stove and tried to light the pilot under a pot that he thought was full of water but instead turned on the pilot under a pot of grease.
The fire spread to the walls as Dion tried to put out the fire with baking soda.
Nalene grabbed a 1-year-old boy she was baby-sitting and got out of the apartment with her husband when she heard the smoke detectors going off.
Neighboring units were evacuated due to heavy smoke and some water damage.
The American Red Cross was called to the scene to help the family.
No one was injured.
Fire investigators did not confirm the cause of the fire currently.
