Reynoldsburg Man Dies When Parachute Fails

CARROLL, Ohio—A skydiver died Saturday afternoon after his main parachute did not deploy and the second opened too close to the ground.

The accident occurred in Greenfield Township just north of the Fairfield County Airport at about 3 p.m. 

Harry T. Short, 59, of Reynoldsburg, jumped from a single-engine Cessna airplane at an approximate altitude of 10,000 feet, according to the Lancaster post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Short was jumping in a group of three people. He was skydiving with acquaintances. 

Short tracked away from the group, and his main parachute never deployed. Short’s reserve parachute deployed, but it was at too low of an altitude to be successful, according to OSP.

The landing happened approximately one mile northeast of the Fairfield County Airport. 

Short died from his injuries at the scene, OSP said.

The FAA continued to investigate the accident, but at this time officials said they do not know why the parachute failed to open.
