Council Could Give Restrictions To Dog Leash Law

COLUMBUS, Ohio—With summer approaching, more people will take their dogs outside, but there could be changes to how you take your dog out for a walk in Columbus.

Riley is still a young pup and loves to play at Goodale Park with his owner, Chelsea Bradshaw.

“We are out here constantly, especially at night. That’s when other dogs are out,“ Bradshaw said.

But it’s playing with other dogs at the park without a leash that could end if a Columbus City Council member has anything to do with it.

“She’s a very good, lovely dog. She likes people, likes to walk,“ Bradshaw said.

NBC 4 confirmed that Councilwoman Priscilla Tyson is revisiting the city’s leash law, which has never been approved.

According to city prosecutors, the legislation would require dog owners to have their dog on a leash at all times unless they’re at a designated dog park.

First-time offenders could a face a minor misdemeanor. Owners who don’t clean up their dog’s waste could also face up to a $150 fine.

One dog owner, Sergey Ganilov, said he likes the proposals.

“Even if your dog is good, other dogs can have aggression,“ Ganilov said.

The legislation could be presented to council in the upcoming weeks.

Both Cleveland and Cincinnati have similar legislation.

It is about time. I am so sick of having my dog scared or attacked by other dogs. Even though I keep my dog on a leash, I can’t control the other dogs. Some owners claim that their dogs are well-behaved and don’t need a leash, but you can not predict your dog’s behavior 100%. This isn’t just about interactions with other dogs, it is about protecting the unleashed dog too. Your dog can take off after a squirrel and get hit by a car. There is no reason not to use a leash. It is just the responsible thing to do.

Why is it, whenever you have stories on leash laws, you almost always quote and interview people who are in favor?  this also isn’t a very complete report.  Are they still thinking of variances for people whose dogs can pass a test and prove they are under control off-lead?
