COLUMBUS, Ohio—The state plans an immediate appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court of a decision delaying an execution three weeks after problems with a separate lethal injection attempt.
Ohio Attorney General spokeswoman Holly Hollingsworth says the state will file an appeal Monday opposing any delay in Thursday’s planned execution of Lawrence Reynolds Jr. A panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati ruled 2-1 Monday to halt the execution of Reynolds, sentenced to die for strangling his 67-year-old neighbor in Cuyahoga Falls in 1994.
The judges based their decision on problems accessing the veins of condemned killer Romell Broom that led Gov. Ted Strickland to stop that execution Sept. 15. The state argues that problems accessing Broom’s veins doesn’t mean that other inmates can’t be executed properly.

I am fundamentally against the death penalty in almost every case. It is irreversable in the case of error and far too often racially motivated. It also clearly doesn’t work as a deterrent and frankly is not American Justice as I understand it. The death penalty should not be legal.
That being said, it is legal, and this man was sentenced to die. It is ridiculous to allow him to delay his sentence based on the difficulties encountered in another man’s execution. I think that the death should be handled in a professional manner with as little torture as possible (surely death is punishment enough?) but the final hour is not the time to challenge the law.
Rem22 Just think of it as a REALLY LATE Late term abortion and the people against it should be ok with it!
IF a doctor can perform late term abortions then he/she should be able to perform exectutions
I say line em up and fry em
I can’t believe the court systems, did all these worthless criminals on death row give their victims time? Did they make certain the victims didn’t suffer? Why is the judical system so comcerned about these worthless morons? I say get on with it hang them, make them suffer I believe its called an eye for an eye
I truly believe that if someone is found guilty of murder and is sentenced to death, then they should die like their victim. If they shot their victim in the head, then shoot them in the head. I also believe that once the sentence is handed down, they should be put to death within 10 days. I for one am sick and tired of supporting these dirtbags.
Even though these guys are scumbags, it is still against medical ethics for a doctor to participate in an execution. He could lose his license. If you haven’t been hiding under a rock, you have noticed the parade of people convicted of serious crimes then later freed by DNA testing because they were not the perpetrator. For that reason, death row inmates are allowed multiple appeals to make sure they are actually the guilty party. All those legal expenses end up making execution more expensive that life without parole.
Here’s an idea for Gov. Ted….take the 30+ death row inmates and start with one execution a day for a month. Then look at the budget afterwards. How much money would Ohioians save? We would no longer have to house them give them medical care [to which there’s is better than mine I DON’T HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE,The victim’s family would be able to finally have closure and maybe be a better deterrent if we carried out the death sentence quicker than 12+ years. Look at it fiscally,it would be in OUR best interest to thin out death row. Crime pays look at the benefits of Ohio’s prison system. If you could have your own wardrobe in prison I’d go.I could use some dental work plus a good eye exam. Thank god I have a fear of needles god knows what a flu shot would be like in prison.
Why don’t the state get a Dr. who knows how to find a vein?....I know if you have to have emergency surgery and they have trouble finding a vein, and they have to find a vein or you will die, they do a cutdown (I think it’s called), and they find a vein….I’m sure there is someone who could do this….
They call this cruel?? Come on people…One of the men raped and stabbed a 14 yr. old girl (think if this had been your daughter, granddaughter, sister), and the other strangled his neighbor to death (think if that had been your dad, father, brother)..I think that is the definition of cruel…
The state needs to put them to death…..Immediately..
Who did what to whom decades ago is not the issue before the Federal Courts.
Had Ohio not botched Broom’s execution in the first place, the question before the Federal Courts would not be there.
The Rule of Law requires that the pending question be addressed.
The Ohio Supreme Court [OSC] had an opportunity to “let’s find out” and rule as did the CCA-VI.
OSC passed (ruled against Reynolds) the question to the Federal level. It’s not the first time and probably will not be the last. 2009-10-05-T1207
Sounds like they need to get the doctor that Michael Jackson used…
Old Sparky if still working was a solid oak electric chair built by an inmate. Would be nice to light’em up like that again. Smells real bad but works.
But why can’t NBC4 talk to Texas, Florida and Louisana and find out what their exection teams do right? Why not contract out to Federal Prison System to have inmate executed by a Feredal execution team since they have no issues either. I bet Federal Appeals Court would okay that.
