Dems Ready To Replace Sheriff

CLEVELAND, Ohio—Democrats in Ohio’s most populous county are preparing to elect a replacement for the sheriff who recently retired.

Cuyahoga County Sheriff Gerald McFaul cited health concerns when he retired last month after 32 years on the job in the county that includes Cleveland. State agents then raided his office as part of an investigation into McFaul’s political fundraising and allegations of theft in office and obstruction of justice.

The county’s Democratic officials will choose a successor in a convention-style vote on May 2. That person would hold the office until next year, when county residents would elect someone to serve until the term ends in 2012.

Representatives from each part of the county will screen candidates this weekend.
