COLUMBUS, Ohio—A woman and a Columbus police SWAT officer were injured Wednesday when the officer hit a deer and crashed into another vehicle.

The crash occurred at about 9 p.m. on Interstate 70 at Hamilton Road. Eastbound I-70 was closed at James and westbound lanes were closed at Interstate 270. The freeway reopened at about 1:15 a.m.

An on-duty Columbus police SWAT officer was traveling eastbound on I-70 in an SUV when he hit a deer, which sent him across the median into the westbound traffic, hitting another vehicle head on.

The female driver of the other car was pinned in her vehicle for about 10 minutes before being taken to the hospital.

The officer and female driver were taken to Grant Medical Center in stable condition.

Columbus police are investigating.

I just hit my 8th deer (All the same Ford van), and it was a 7 point buck. It cost me 600 in damage to the van. Had to replace my fan and radator, and my 1 headlight was busted.

Anyway, the minute it happened, the van started to steam from the radator as it was busted, and I turned the engine off. The deer tried to get up, but then died right there a few feet from the van. After the officer gave me the paper to claim the deer, I had the van towed to a garage, but the deer was so much heavier then any I had before, that the tow guy helped me throw it in the van.

Why wasn’t the officer cited for “failure to control”?

I travel this portion of highway daily, there are most definitely deer around here.  It’s amazing that they are reporting the people involved are in stable condition.  I hope they both make a full recovery.

I was on my way home the other night on 670 westbound at the split for 71, and there was a dead deer laying on the right berm.  I think that’s the farthest inside of 270 that I’ve seen a deer.

Also, if you watched the news report you would have heard the reporter say that the deer was dead along side the road.

Actually if you watch the news report you’ll see there are cable barriers where this occured and the vehicle jumped over them….

We got hit by a deer instead of the other way round. It must have been suicidal… lol. It ran up out of the ditch and directly into the side of our minivan. It totaled the van out. Pretty funny though.

1) Yes, there are lots of woods in that area, full of deer and other animals.

2) There are no gaurdrails, cable barriers or barrier walls on that section of I-70. Just a 30 foot wide grass median.

I hit a deer once. It walked right out onto the road from beside a house. Tore car up and really screwed up my day.
You never know anymore where deer will be. Ohio does a poor job by not allowing a longer gun season and by not allowing hunters to take at least 6 deer per hunter per year.I know also that a deer can take a pretty good hit and end up still hundreds of yards away
before it drops and dies
