Dog Dies After Receiving Rabies Vaccine; Cause Undetermined
COLUMBUS,Ohio—Charity Frazier took her 1-year-old bulldog mix puppy to the Franklin County Animal Shelter Friday for a rabies vaccination.
The shot was administered by medvet.
Charity says her dog vomitted and turned blue after the shot, but when she tried to bring the situation to someone’s attention, she says they brushed it off like nothing was wrong.
Charity took the dog to the Obetz Animal Hospital, where a veterinarian said the dog was suffocating and appeared to be going through shock. Attempts to save the dog were unsuccessful.
The Franklin County Dog Shelter says Charity did not tell a medvet veterinarian what happened while she was at the shelter, otherwise steps would have been taken to try and save the dog.
The shelter is very apologetic but says this is a very rare occurrence and has never happened there before.
The shelter workers vaccinated more than 800 dogs on Friday and no others became sick. The shelter assumes the death was a reaction to the vaccine but will not know until an autopsy is complete.
The maker of the vaccine is paying for the autopsy.
Anyone who administers the vaccine is not required to provide information about risks, but the shelter says it is considering doing this in the future.
The veterinarian from the Obetz Animal Hospital stresses this is a very rare occurrence and should not keep dog owners from getting their dogs vaccinated.
Her advice is to stay in close proximity to any veterinarian who administers the vaccine for at least 20 minutes after a dog is vaccinated. That way if it shows signs of a reaction, steps can be taken to try and save it.
Signs of a reaction include vomiting, swelling and hives.

Chantal, I’m so sorry for your loss. I know how it is to lose a furbaby. I had to put down my darling Pepper this past October. She had bloodclots in her lungs due to a condition she developed after 911 (we’re in NYC). These problems are why I haven’t given my new puppy the rabies vaccine and don’t intend to. He got his puppy shots from the breeder and 1 Parvo and 1 distemper, but that’s it, no more for him. My 10 yr old has not been given vaccines since she was 2. I have a holistic/homeopathic vet who is willing to take titers instead. The best thing we did after Peppers passing was get the puppy. He helped to heal the hurt although we think about her every day. Check out the yahoo group Truth About Vaccines for ALOT of info on why to not vaccinate. Good Luck!
I just lost my baby on Thursday July 16, 2009. I’m absolutley devistated. She was 5 yrs old. I took her in for a check-up and her shots on July 7,2009. She checked out with a perfect bill of health. Two days later she started hiding. (She has beds all over the house.) When I checked on her I picked her up and she screamed then I noticed vomit in her bed. I called her vet and all she had me do was give her baby Benedryl. One day Tiki was up the next she was down and a few days later the next thing you know she started fading fast. By the time she made it to her vet it was already to late. I think that vets should have a legal obligation to tell parents that there are risks when giving our children vaccines. To some people they’re just pets but to most of us they are our children members of the family. I even dressed her and carried her around like a baby. She ate up every minute of it. I feel I robbed her of the rest of her life.
Puppies and tiny dogs are being given the exact same dose of rabies vaccine as dogs 10 times their size and not surprisingly many of these puppies and tiny dogs are having a disproportionate number of bad reactions.

I took my healthy, happy yorkie mix (wt 7 lb) to the vets on April 29, 2009 for his rabies booster. I was not warned of any side effects. While there my dog also had a health wellness check. He had a sore area at the injection site for a few days. On the evening of Thursday May 7, my dog started to vomit and was lethargic, on Friday morning on May 8 my small dog died. How many more reactions like this occur and are missed. Do we really need to vaccinate our dogs so frequently.
No matter what the vets say, the rabies shot is what caused the dog’s demise. Of course vets don’t want to disuade pet owners from getting them vaccinated. They make a large portion of their income from giving vaccines. It’s mostly a matter of money and not real care of the animals’ welfare. The same goes for selling all that crap dog food in bags. Vets only get a workshop in nutrition sponsored by dog food companies. That’s where they get their info on dog nutrition. It’s such a shame that poor puppy had to die.
anaphylactic shock and death are just a couple of “side effects” of vaccinations. Having investigated the “to vaccinate-or-not vaccinate” question when our first son was born in ‘85, I was shocked to learn of the many “sub-clinical” effects which were also common following administration of the vaccines given to children(and most people aren’t aware that we actually do have a choice in the matter). I wonder how many dogs suffer other side effects(like allegy issues, behavioral and other seemingly unrelated physical disorders) that have been associated with vaccines and children. By the way, somehow our four boys survived very nicely without being vaccinated(2Honor Society students, 1Home Coming King, 3Soccer Team Captains, the list is huge. Any, no-one likes a braggart, nor an “irresponsible/wreckless” parent. But, more people should investigate the matter a little more thoroughly.
I have never been to a Vet office that has posted warnings about vaccines and possible reactions… This is not the fault of Franklin County Dog Shelter but an unfortunate evet…
