FBI Increases Computer Forensics

CENTERVILLE, Ohio—The FBI is increasing its use of computer forensics to look for links to terrorism, murders, child porn and other crimes.

A new computer lab is operating in the Dayton suburb of Centerville. It’s one of 14 Regional Computer Forensics Laboratories in the United States.

The FBI examines digital evidence collected at crime scenes from computers, cell phones, PDAs and video cameras. The investigators, who use search warrants, are capable of locating deleted, encrypted or damaged files.

Jon Berryhill, president of San Francisco-based Berryhill Computer Forensics Inc., says FBI examiners also analyze e-mail, Web sites and other computer activities on suspects.

Berryhill says this area of law enforcement is growing quickly as the technology grows.
