70 Firefighters Battle 2-Alarm Warehouse Blaze

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Fire crews continued to investigate a two-alarm blaze at a well-known South Side business.

NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.

Columbus fire was called out to a T. Marzetti Company warehouse at 1709 Frank Rd. at about 3:15 a.m. Monday.

Firefighters found fire and heavy smoke upon arrival.

Authorities said the fire was concentrated in the southeast corner of the warehouse, where cardboard boxes primarily were stored.

Finding the fire proved to be easier than fighting it, though.

Firefighters actually had to break through steel doors to enter the warehouse and had to punch a hole through a cinderblock wall to get to the blaze.

Sheets of cardboard were stacked more than halfway to the warehouse’s ceiling.

Firefighters used forklifts to move the smoldering cardboard boxes outside.

The fire was contained before 5 a.m. but continued to smolder for several hours.

Authorities said about 70 firefighters were called to the scene.

Officials said the cause of the fire remained unclear and estimated the damage at about $200,000.

Investigators said they’re looking at a number of possibilities, including a forklift battery.

No one was inside the warehouse at the time of the fire, and no one was injured.

Portions of Frank Road were closed while crews investigated.

The road reopened to traffic before 9:30 a.m.
