Flu Bug Putting Bite On High School Football

DAYTON, Ohio—Officials in western Ohio say the flu bug has forced a rash of high school football games to be postponed and added a new element to game preparations.

Coaches and administrators say the mass illnesses have taken a toll on players whose games require lots of physical exertion. Many players once would have shrugged off sickness to make practice. But coaches now worry about illness spreading to the rest of the team.

At Fairmont High School, players with fevers are not allowed at practice, no matter how slightly elevated their temperatures. Jon Bruce, a center for the Tipp City High School team, says practicing in pads and a helmet while coming down with the flu makes the equipment feel heavier and everything seem to move more slowly.
