Dangerous Intersections
What makes the intersection of Karl and Morse roads so dangerous?

CENTRAL OHIO—The intersection at Karl and Morse roads on the city’s North Side is one of Central Ohio’s most unsafe and flawed intersections.
The intersection saw 201 crashes between 2005 and 2007, according to the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission or MORPC.
NBC 4’s Matt Alvarez DUG DEEPER to find out what makes this intersection so dangerous.
Drivers who travel through the intersection at Karl and Morse know it gets a bit dicey.
“Especially when the fire engines are pulling out of here,” one driver said. “I mean no one pays attention to where they’re going.”
Seemingly, motorists don’t know what to do when a fire engine drives out of its station and into the intersection: Some pass by, some yield and others stop.
It’s a situation Columbus Fire Lieutenant Ryan Brzezinski knows well.
“Everyone is trying to be in a hurry and try to beat the trucks and get through.” he said.
The intersection was ranked as having the third most crashes in Central Ohio. Morse Road and Cleveland Avenue ranked No. 1.
“I think a big part of it has to do with the location of the fire station. There’s a median there, and people just don’t know which way to go,” resident Matt Ashmore said.
“There have been a few accidents that have happened. Cars are trying to yield. Someone is in a hurry, and they’ll rear-end them,” Brzezinski said.
Is there a solution, though?
Relocation of the fire department was an option at one time, but with the current budget crisis and construction in the area motorists and firefighters will have to be patient.

Do you suppose they can use their Ohio Direction card to pay their traffic tickets?
Sunny…..racist or not…...you are ABSOLUTELY correct!
I have to agree with you Sunny….LMFAO!! :-)
I live by this intersection and here is my solution: the city needs to finish up the constant construction (or at least do one project at a time - it is ALWAYS tore up around there) and help the many Somalis who drive through there learn how to drive and understand the laws! I promise I am not a racist, but if you live in the area…you know what I am talking about!!!
that is a wonderful idea, although they may still have to install a light due to the location of the exit.
Jake42 is absolutely right! Freeze the traffic signal on Red when they get the call and the traffic will be stopped when they come out of the firehouse. There was a system in downtown Marion just like that 45 years ago. The froze all the lights on red until the trucks got going. Not a hard thing to do in this technoligical environment we have today.
I am in that area and the solutions seems to be as simple as puting a light up that stops the traffic as soon as they are dispatched. Where ever they are headed is extremely more important than where any motorist is headed, they are simply trying to save lives.
I live in that neighborhood and it’s not up to the city or any other ‘official’ to waste money to figure out HOW to fix it! The answer is simple!!!!!
EVERYONE needs to slow down and respect the emergency vehicles! It’s easy..WHEN you SEE lights…STOP!!! Don’t speed up and don’t try and ‘beat them’....just think..they might be going to YOUR house or helping YOUR family member! Give them the right of way and slow down!
We need to STOP depending on the city, county or state to fix things. Be accountable for your own actions and be courtous to others around you and it will all work out!
Do I want them to move the fire station and sub station so that it’s easier on drivers? NO! Leave it there and make the drivers change!
If you don’t like the intersection and can’t respect it…then find a different way to go! There are plenty of other roadways that will get you there quicker! Don’t put MY life at risk just cause YOU don’t want to wait the few moments that it takes for the emergency vehicles to get where they are going!
Just slow down, Stay OFF your cell phone (that was you can be aware of your surroundings), turn down the radio (again so you can hear) and be respectful!
That way…we are all safe!
mcfan,
All I said was that there has to be a better solution than “motorists and firefighters will have to be patient.“ And I say THAT because we all know that isn’t going to happen. People aren’t going to just be patient! I, for one, wish they would! But, we can’t make them. And I don’t understand what was so bad about my having said THAT.
So, I guess I’m not entirely sure why you felt the need to address me directly. I didn’t say ANYTHING about the location of the firehouse, that was the article. I didnt say we should move the firehouse. That, again, was the article. I wasn’t complaining. Again, the article.
Wouldn’t it be possible to have a control in the firehouse that could make all the lights at that intersection red to stop all traffic before the emergency vehicle exits?
