Hearing Continues In Freshwater Case

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio—A controversy surrounding the practicing of religion in a public school continues as a local teacher fights to win back his job.
The employment hearing for Mount Vernon Middle School science teacher John Freshwater continued Tuesday, as an independent investigator hired by the school district presented his findings.
Among his findings was wrongdoing by Freshwater when he allegedly used an electrostatic device to burn a cross on a student’s arm.
The investigator also alleged Freshwater’s insubordination by bringing a Bible into the classroom and then refusing to remove it when school district officials asked him, and taking a role as facilitator instead of just a monitor of Fellowship of Christian Athlete meetings.
An attorney for Freshwater questioned the investigator’s interview techniques, saying he had a problem with the handwritten notes that the interviewer used, instead of written statements or audio recordings from the witnesses in the case.
The case is expected to continue for several more days if not weeks before a final decision is rendered.
