HOW TO: Keep Your Pets Calm And Safe During Fireworks

COLUMBUS, Ohio —Fireworks: you either love or hate them. And most dogs can’t stand them.

Dogs can get so scared by fireworks that they run away, but there are new products that may help your pooch through the Independence Day celebrations.

Mike Elkind, owner of Pet People, says there are some over-the-counter options to calm your dog.

“The first one is called anxiety relief by HomeoPet and this is droplets that you would give either through the mouth directly or their water bowl,“ Elkind said.

The drops sell for $15.

Another product, Renew Life, comes in tablet form and sells for $26.99.

Then, there are pheromone-based products.

“The first one we have is widely recognized by veterinarians. It’s called Comfort Zone,“ Elkind said. “It comes with a diffuser where the pheromones are distributed into the air and the dogs breathe it in. Those pheromones make them relax.“

A collar works off the same concept. It’s called Century Good Behavior. The pheromones are in the collar and it sells for $15.

Another option is a calming vest for your dog. They’re tight fitting and are made to relieve anxiety in dogs.

One is sold through Phantom Fireworks and costs $36.

Another is called an anxiety wrap and is sold online for about $70.

Experts say that sometimes it’s all trial and error in finding what works for your pet.

In the long-term, a prescription, like valium for your dog may be best if the other over-the-counter options don’t work.
