Hundreds Flood Ohio Quarry To Break Scuba Record
Published: July 18, 2009
OTTAWA, Ohio —A popular Ohio diving quarry hopes to break the world record for the most scuba divers plunging underwater at once. Hundreds of divers are gathering Saturday at the Gilboa Quarry about 65 miles southwest of Toledo to try to beat the record. The current mark was set in February 2006 off the shores of the Indian Ocean nation of the Maldives when 979 divers submerged at once. Operators of the 14-acre quarry say more than 700 scuba divers had signed up by late in the week. Quarry caretaker Mike Williams says even if the group comes up short it will still be a memorable feat. Divers must spend about 20 minutes in the water at a depth of at least 20 feet.
