Local Firefighter Who Shot, Dumped Dogs Pleads

PLEA DEAL: A Columbus firefighter who admits he fatally shot his dogs and dumped them at a fire station enters a guilty plea and is sentenced.
COLUMBUS, Ohio—A Columbus firefighter who admitted he fatally shot his dogs and dumped them at a fire station entered a plea Wednesday.
It’s a story NBC 4 has been following since late last year, and NBC 4’s Mikaela Hunt was in the courtroom for his sentencing.
David Santuomo seemed edgy but not visibly upset during his hearing in Franklin County municipal court.
Prosecutors painted a grim picture of what happened at Santuomo’s home right before his December vacation: The defendant laid plastic sheeting on the floor of his basement and tied the dogs to a pipe running along the ceiling. The dogs were partially suspended from the ceiling. He took a rifle, which he equipped with a homemade silencing device, and shot the dogs multiple times.
Santuomo pleaded guilty to two charges of animal cruelty and one count of possessing criminal tools Wednesday. All three are misdemeanor charges.
Judge Harlan Hale sentenced the firefighter to 90 days in jail, five years of probation and a five-year ban on having or living with an animal.
Hale said Santuomo would not be allowed to own firearms and was required to get alcohol, drug and mental-health counseling.
Santuomo’s sentence also included writing an apology letter that will appear in International Fire Fighters Magazine and 200 hours of community service.
Santuomo did not speak in court and would not speak with Hunt after the sentencing.
“Why did he choose not to speak up in court this morning? Because this was the result of lengthy negotiations between the parties,” Santuomo’s defense lawyer Sam Shamansky said. “The court accepted the resolution, and he didn’t have anything further to add. Through me he wanted to add how remorseful he is.”
Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien said his office did not pursue felony charges because there is not a felony animal-abuse charge under Ohio law.
“We felt that the misdemeanors with 180 days was a sufficient resolution,” O’Brien said.
Santuomo told Capital Area Humane Society investigators the two dogs grew ill after digesting antifreeze Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008. He said the dogs were shot Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008.
Kerry Manion, chief humane agent said Santuomo told him he didn’t have enough money to take the dogs to the vet. That was after humane-society agents retrieved the dogs’ bodies from the dumpster behind Firehouse 27 on Smoky Row Road.
Manion said the dogs were shot multiple times with a .22-caliber firearm.
Toxicology tests that determined whether the dogs were poisoned with antifreeze were not available. The necropsy results were not made available because the Capital Area Humane Society, which performed the procedure, is a private entity.
Battalion Chief Doug Smith said there was talk Santuomo shot the dogs because he had no one to take care of them while on a vacation cruise.
NBC 4 obtained a search warrant on Santuomo’s home late last year that said Santuomo sent several text messages bragging that he was going to shoot his dogs instead of paying for their boarding during his vacation.
Columbus fire said it remained unclear currently whether Santuomo, a 12-year veteran, will keep his job with the division.
The division completed an internal investigation, and the fire chief was to make the decision on possible job loss or reprimand.
Local 67 said the misdemeanor crimes were not an issue of job performance.
Columbus Firefighters Union president Jack Reall said he was surprised by the detailed sentencing and that rapists are sentenced to less.

Why are you still beating this dead horse? The guy pled guilty, was found guilty and as far as I know has begun to serve his sentence. Let this go and move on to more important things.
He needs to be terminated from his position in serving the public. What kind of message does this portray to the the children who think firefighters ROCK! Its a moral issue as well. I hope he loses his EMT license, then they will have to terminate him. He violated the morals contract. His sentencing wasnt enough for him in my book
Hrm..why not hang him helplessly and shoot him multiple times as he did the dogs? He’s a sick b*. Now that I know who he is I’ll be the first to spit in his face if I ever see him.
I suggest that it would depend upon the circumstances.
Since he would be on the job, I suggest that he would follow policy.
Lives and safety of humans are going to have a higher priority than a dog, a cat, a goldfish, etc.
True, there have been times when owners have chosen to risk their own lives to save an animal. Sometime they win ... sometimes they loose.
Imagine yourself in a situation where there is your life/safety plus the life/safety of two others, all at risk.
The situational logistics are that you can only save yourself and one of the other two. If you sacrifice yourself, all three will die.
One of the other two is my child, the second of the two is your child.
Under the circumstances, I suggest that you will save your child, just as you would expect me to save my child if the scenario were flipped.
Personally, doreedoo4, I hope you NEVER EVER have a fire. Even with no life loss and no injury, fires are traumatic events.

Would he save my dog if I have a fire, I’m not sure. I would not want this firefighter to come to my house.

Jaguar
We are highest on the food chain.
I don’t see animals as being equals.
I do see this idiot as a sadist with a mental condition and i do not want a fool like this performing the job he has on my tax dollar.
Maybe the next time he is running up a ladder someone should tie their dogs leash to it and let it jerk the idiot off ,dropping him down in the basement with the upper floors following him down.
You made the statement that Hitler himself didn’t mistreat his dogs .Think about that and apply it to this pig!
First of all, Mr. Santuomo was wrong to kill the dogs.
Mr. Santuomo broke the law and he was charged, convicted and punished.
Drivers who have wrongfully killed PEOPLE have received lighter punishment.

Once the dog was shot in the head at close range, the dog was immediately humanely destroyed. Any additional rounds were superfluous.
His ability to fight fires is mutually exclusive from an obligation to properly care for his dogs.
Agreed that he is not on the short list for training, boarding, walking, etc., dogs as a profession.

BTW, Hitler liked dogs and did not mistreat his dog.
Unrepentent,
Sorry your Union sucked. Maybe you should have gotten involved and changed it to what you wanted. That’s how Democracies work. You can’t change anything by constantly posting on a media blog.
MICHAEL JACKSON HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH A MURDERING FIREFIGHTER.
WAY TO GO MIKE !
I have to admit y’all sure have the unusual part covered in “cruel or unusual punishment”. Did you tear the wings off butterflies when you were kids?
