NEW ALBANY, Ohio—According to Mifflin Township Battalion Chief Tim Taylor, fire crews arrived on the scene of 7063 Pleasant Colony Way, in New Albany, just after 10:30am and discovered smoke coming from a basement window the unit. As they entered the building they found a working fire within the walls of the unit.

A single resident who was home and asleep at the time of the fire was awakened by a smoke detector. Chief Taylor credits the smoke detector for saving the resident’s life. The resident was able to escape the unit unharmed.

Due to amount of smoke in the unit, there was a build up of carbon monoxide gas in the adjacent unit, 7061 Pleasant Colony Way. Not knowing if anyone was in the unit due to the deadly build up of the gas, crews forced entry to the unit and discovered two family pets inside. A dog and cat were retrieved and from the unit and treated at the scene.

After testing the air, it was discovered that the carbon monoxide gas had reached a level just above 450 parts per million. These levels are extremely deadly to humans over a short period of time.

The cause of the fire has not been determined as of yet. A fire investigator is on the scene collecting evidence and talking to witnesses to put together an exact cause.

I love this picture of the firefighter and the dog.  I hope the owner frames it and hangs it in their house.  I’m glad no one hurt and everyone is okay.
