What’s being done to clean up properties and help surrounding neighborhoods?
COLUMBUS, Ohio—A building at Cleveland and 20th Avenues has been vacant for 10 years and is a disaster inside.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.
“The paint was chipping, the roof was falling off so it had really become a blight on the neighborhood,“ said Donna Hicho of the Greater Linden Development Corporation.
Inside there were liquor bottles, syringes and trash in excess.
However, within the year it will be transformed into a new office building in the heart of Cleveland Avenue with the help of the new owner.
She was able to purchase the building for a cheap price with the help from the city and the Greater Linden Development Corporation.
Vacant homes and buildings have become a problem plaguing Columbus.
East Broad Street has a large amount of vacant or soon to be vacant buildings.
A Big Bear store at the Town and County Shopping Center has sat vacant for over five years, and the second McDonalds in Columbus, which was later renovated into a hair salon, has sat vacant for two years.
“We have vacant buildings that are dealing either with foreclosure or bankruptcy of the individual who owned them. We’ve even had buildings that have been purchased by somebody who wanted to make a difference in the neighborhood then their circumstance changed.“ Hicho said.

Why not “gut” them and recycle or reuse what can be salvaged?
Listen Mike, the Dairy Queen on Parsons Avenue isn’t boarded up and vacant, it’s closed for the season—just as it is every year. Being a real reporter means doing your homework.
