Nelsonville Launches Safety E-Mail To Citizens

NELSONVILLE, Ohio—A service billed by the city of Nelsonville, Ohio, as free, simple and trusted has been launched, aimed at providing timely information to citizens who will be affected by it. 

Public Information Officer Dan Pfeiffer explained that the service has been created to provide secure communications by way of Web, e-mail, and cell phone. 

Those messages will connect municipal agencies and community organizations to residents in real time, Pfeiffer says. 

The city explains that the information can be geographically targeted to consumers by way of text messages or emails. 

Residents will have to register to get the service, but there is no cost. 

The service is being called “Nixle” after the provider. 

The information could include weather alerts, haz-mat notification, traffic problems, or missing persons. 

Subscribers can indicate the level of information they wish to receive. 

Nelsonville is one of the first communities in the area to initiate the service, but several others are considering the service, Pfeiffer told NBC 4.
