New Nursing Home Ratings Released

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Loved ones left in the care of others is a tough and emotional choice for anyone who’s ever searched for a nursing home.

Now, there is new information that can help make the decision easier.

Last week, NBC 4‘s Mikaela Hunt reported on a federal ratings system for nursing homes.  Many people who work in the industry were upset, saying the federal rankings were over-simplified.

At the time, the Ohio Department of Aging said that families should instead look to the state’s guide, which they believe is more comprehensive.

It’s called the long term care consumer guide, and Monday, results of it’s new survey were released, scoring nursing homes throughout Ohio.

Much of the survey is based on comments from nursing home residents and their loved ones.

Visitors to the Web site begin by choosing a county and city, with an option of selecting a particular medical need the resident may have.
From there, users are given a list of facilities and their scores.
Users can also click on the facility’s name, and find out the staffing numbers.

The average score for Ohio facilities was 86.6 out of 100—indicating an overall high satisfaction level.

I was so interested in this rating system as my mother was in several different Nursing Homes in Fairfield County before her death this past April.  I too am not sure about the State’s rating System.  I can tell you first hand as a family member & a retired R.N. that Lanfair Rehab. is outstanding in all aspects of long term care.  My mother spent her last 6 mos. there.  She had been unhappy in several other local Nursing Homes & was as happy as she could be @ Lanfair.  The staff was kind, considerate, professional & helped me deal with many a difficult situation.  The Director even helped me move my mother’s belongings into her room on her adm.  They should have 5 star ratings across the board.  Staffing is always a problem in Nursing homes as the hrs are long, the demands high & the salaries low.  I admire those who continue in this line of health care.
Respectfully, Cheryl Lukuch

i work in a nursing home in mount vernon ohio and i feel we should have scored better than we did, we provide care and love to our residents and there families alot of times we are there only family.if you dont work in our field you cant know how hard we work and love, its a very heartbreaking job to love these people and lose them.we take care of them everyday and night.i take my residents home with me at night(in my mind and heart)i cry when they pass just as much as there real family.and im not the only one we all do!we are sometimes the last person they see or hear,we know what a smile or kind word means.state comes and tells us we cant tell them we love them or call them honey or sweetheart because it belittles them, but what if we are the only people that tell them these things.we do love your loved ones when you allow us to care for them.when you pick a nursing home go there dont take someone elses word for it make a visit talk with residents and family talk with the staff see how they interact with the residents then choose. thank you and merry christmas.
