A mail carrier found a newborn baby wrapped in plastic at an abandoned house Saturday.
COLUMBUS, Ohio—A mail carrier found a newborn baby wrapped in plastic at an abandoned house Saturday.
The baby girl was found on the front porch of the home on Marble Drive at about 10 a.m.
According to the U.S. Postal Service, the letter carrier, Michael Herron, was walking by the home, heard a noise and saw a plastic bag that was moving. Authorities said Herron saw the child, went to a neighboring home and called police and paramedics.
“I wish whoever this baby belonged to would have dropped it off at a hospital or to a fire department because the baby was in the direct sun and who knows how long she’d been there,“ Herron said.
Officials said the baby appeared to be several hours old. The baby’s umbilical cord and was reportedly in good shape, without complications.
Investigators with Franklin County Children Services said they are hoping that relatives will come forward and identify the infant’s mother.
The infant was taken to Children’s Hospital in stable condition.
Fire officials said the vacant home is less than half a mile from the a fire station, where the mother could have left the baby without question.

I must be doin’something right if one of you (Tinks) thinks I’m a crack addict and another (Officer wow09) figures I’m a sheltered professional in a highback chair with no experience in “ruffer”(sic) parts of town! Actually I grew up in hilltop/bottoms…did fairly well for myself despite adversities - scholarship to OSU…was attacked because I looked out-of-place where I lived, I won’t go into specifics about my attacker because LEO had nothing to do with catching him, and I don’t want to be identified and singled out by the red, white and blues.
One thing I NEED to straighten out…I DO NOT believe the mother did the right thing. There is no question about that. I believe she should have found a nice rich couple who could well afford it but were unable to have kids on their own and sold them her precious baby girl. As for how the kid would be impacted in later years…what…like she’s going to remember? She will only know what the new parents told her and hopefully as she matured the parents would be honest and tell her that they got her by rescuing her from a (to say the least) dysfunctional upbringing. As for the gay pride parade, you’re right, there is ONE activity where women will get away with it…maybe! but when it’s 95 degrees in the shade and you see a woman and a man walking together and you KNOW she’s uncomfortable in that top…it won’t come off! Women are arrested for BREAST FEEDING “in public”! Ridiculous!
as for LEO lying…I wasn’t talking about murderers and rapists and drug dealers…etc. I was talking about how they’d promised ON TELEVISION that they would not arrest “mom”...just wanted to talk to her. They didn’t need to lie! All they needed to do was implore neighbors, family, friends to lead them in the right direction. That group would have been so incensed by the mother’s actions they would have been clamoring for a phone to call in the information. Instead LEO put out this huge line of scatology about how they wouldn’t arrest her…only wanted to talk to her.
Everyone out there who has seen my posts in the past knows how I feel about the police. I don’t need to beat a dead horse.
MY LAST POST ON THIS ONE FOLKS… but I’m sure you’ll see me again when I get my dander up about other issues…
You might have miss understood my posting. First I meant no matter what age in doig such the woman/girl made some lousy choices there (to put it nicely). the dady is a bum and no less in my eyes, and as for putting them in jail yeah sounds great.. But it costs tax payers thousands of dollars to give the woman three hots and a cot for years while she gets tv, a roof over the head, and so forth.. No har labor, no long days working for such, just tax payrs givng her three hots and a cot for years for her nasty crime.. If they made criminals work daily it might make me a little more content at jail time for them..
As for me being angry or disturbed..yeah sure I have my thoughts and so forth, but no not geting to bent about stuff no good in doing it (doesn’t always work, some times I get disturbed, but usually not).
Hopefully this helps you understand my view better.. If not I don’t know what else to say yes these lousy people doing such.
Anonymous, are you on crack? Your statements sound as if you might be. Why are you so angry, sounds like you have some problems of you own and are striking out at anyone. Anyone who dumps their innocent infant, deserves to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law regardless if they are young, older, white, black, green or purple. If we just pat them on the back and say “oh that is ok, we understand,“ more will do the same. Throwing your baby on the roadside, dumping then in a plastic bag is not the answer. How many people do you know, who have tried to give up their baby under the Safe Haven Law, that have been asked questions, detained etc.? Thought not, to this date, anyone who has used the Safe Haven Law has been able to do just what the law states and your ignorance makes more scared mothers dump their child. I can well understand the mentality that causes women to do this but if you are old enough to lay down and spread your legs, then you are old enough to know what to do with the infant even if you don’t want it.
Well lets see the dady is probably some worthless bum to begin with, since he didn’t take a role in raising the baby.. the mother well.. Worthless no excuse age or what have you to spread your legs, no birth control, and then to wrop it up and essentialy kill the baby.. Worthless kid or adult.. So many poor parenting as well as bad adults doing just the same..
As for the police or law on this, doesn’t matter the woman could have given the baby over to parents grandparents, friend, or just set it on any body’s door step..
Lousy people making even worse choices.. Sad sorry world either rich and often greedy or poor and way to stupid to contribute to society.. And puting the woman in jail for years only makes tax payers give this sorry bum three hots and a cot out of our money we go to work for, not my favorite idea to do.
Well I can say with confidence, people you are just plain ingnorant. You are so worried what the police do or would not do to assist this mother with a unwanted child.
Get over it, we do not know if how this child came to be in our world. She will have some ruff times trying to figure out why her mommy or daddy left her to roit on a porch.

You have no clue about law enforcement and you show it in the way you speak. Of course the Officer is going to investigate if a person walks up and states, here is my baby. Why wouldn’t they. That is called investigations. After that, the “mother” would go away, without arrest because as you think you know, its not a crime. Usually, when these “mothers” do this, they always want the child back anyway, but if the Officers don’t investigate, how will she get the child back. And of course Law Enforcement lie, why wouldn’t they. Oh please turn yourself in Mr Rapist, Murderer, we won’t put you in jail. Its called a good tactic to get crap bags like that in jail. Any “mother” that dumps their child, deserves nothing but the worst. I would lie just to lock there no good, sorry excuse for a “mother” butts up any way I could find. You are probably one of these sit behind a desk, get paid very well persons that don’t get picked apart in anything you do because it does nothing but put money in your pocket. Quite trying to think you know what police do or why they do it, but don’t worry, they will still help everyone they can even though doodo like you don’t respect it. Why don’t you volunteer some of your time to ride with an Officer in the ruffer parts of town and then tell me what you think about these “mothers” that are dumping their babies, (at a very fast rate, just think you only hear about the dumpings because police don’t report the legal dumpings.) You tell me how innocent a 14 yr old that has 2 other kids dumps a child and you hug her and tell her everything is alright. But I’m sure you don’t want to take off your pretty suit and tie, or dress, you would rather let the brave do it for you. And oh yeah, drop your kids off and let some dirt bag put them in plastic, just nicely tucked around them so they don’t suffocate, and leave them for the dogs. Your comment about public nuisance doesn’t even make sense. You can walk around topless, but its not a public nuisance. If you touch your breast in an arrotic manor (which always happens when the tops come off) that is called public indecency. Like I said earlier, stop trying to be the police if your to scare to do it for yourself. Have you ever been to the gay pride parade, didn’t see any of them getting arrested. Go back to your comfy leather chair and complain like everyone else. Thank you Law Enforcement, take them all to jail.
I think it’s a shame that a mother would feel she had to leave her baby where someone would find it, rather than be able to turn it into the proper authorities, but I believe anonomous when he/she says there would be grief.
Who said the Mom was on crack? Maybe just a confused young girl who didn’t think she had a choice. Maybe Mom and Dad would find out, had she been able to keep her pregnancy secret.
Maybe there should be secret “drop off boxes” where Mom could drive up and push a button and have a drawer roll out and gently accept the baby. Of course, this would have to be monitored, but if it got out that nothing bad happened to Mom (or whoever) then maybe more babies would be dropped off at safe places. Just an idea. Just grabbing at straws, but there has to be a better way.

wow09, in response to your question of how this became a police bashing article, I suggest you re-read it. IF LEO had been honest on other occasions, then I agree that the mother would have no excuse. THEY LIED!!! THEY cause half the problems. If you want to continue to believe that police enforce the laws, not make them…then finish your sentence as follows…“...police enforce the laws SELECTIVELY not make them up.“. As for the baby being found in a plastic bag…think about it…the baby did not asphyxiate! Why do you suppose that is? Maybe because the baby was not in an ENCLOSED plastic bag? (Not that whether the bag was enclosed or not is the issue…except the baby WAS ALIVE!) and Annoyed…I am in full agreement with you. EXCEPT that I don’t believe for a minute that a mother is going to be able to walk up to a police officer and say here, take this and walk away. NEVER GONNA HAPPEN! Law or no law…Not gonna happen! The only way that mother would be able to walk away is in handcuffs. The cop would want her name, her address, her ID, wait while I call this in… are you on drugs? Don’t go anywhere until I run a 50 on you… who’s the father… I think you need psychiatric help…etc, etc, etc. MAYBE, just MAYBE the mother COULD escape like the law promises…but I doubt it! I wouldn’t trust that law to the lames that we pay to enforce it…would you? Here’s an example of how that law works…
In Ohio (including Columbus) it is 100% perfectly legal for a woman to walk around in public topless. That has been decided in court time and time again. Doesn’t it make you wonder why the flamboyant/exhibitionist women - even if it’s only the prostitutes - don’t do it? I can tell you…It’s called “public nuisance”. LEO WILL find a way to arrest them! LEO doesn’t care what the law is…they enforce laws selectively!
As for mom getting 10K by selling the kid and using the 10K for crack…you’re right, she probably would. but she’s gonna make her crack money anyway. Isn’t it better that the kid not be there? She’s gonna have more crack babies anyway…the 10K wouldn’t matter! She’s gonna work the street and flatback to make money for dope…and she’s gonna do that when the 10K runs out…she’s gonna do that when she gets outta jail…she’s gonna do that anyway. She won’t quit doing that until SHE’S ready! But it COULD just be that the 10K would be enough to give her a fresh start and convince her to spend half of it for a trip through Maryhaven or wherever. Likely? No. Possible? Yes. I already knew I’d take a beating for my post on this one but I call ‘em like I see ‘em!
Anonymous, if you start buying crack babies, then their mothers will spend it all on crack and then have more babies so you’ll give them more money for more crack. And they’ll be crack babies, not regular healthy ones. Who’s going to pay for that?
