COLUMBUS, Ohio—Columbus fire sent hazmat units out to the West Side late Sunday after getting several calls of an irritating odor in the air.

Residents of El Paso Drive and Vera Place, near Hague Avenue, were among those who called the Columbus Fire Department, concerned for their safety.

Here are the FAST FACTS.

Equipment from two battalions responded to the area.

One engine found a trash fire and put it out but said that it was not the source of the piercing odor.

Firefighters on the scene reported that the smell was strongest near a church on Vera Place but could not identify a source.

Nothing was found after fire officials screened the area.

Thats just the smell of Columbus. When You have a city turning into a trash pile your going to have some smell. Most of it is at City Hall

While out last night visiting friends, we also could smell the odor.  We were near 5th Avenue. and 670. That is northeast of downtown Columbus. The odor was strong in the air. My first thought was the Petroleum Plant down east 5th Avenue.  It opened a few months ago. Every time I drive pass the plant on my way to Yearling Rd, I would hold my breath.  I wonder how the city allowed the Petroleum Plant to open near a residential neighborhood, Restaurants, DCSS, and other businesses. It’s Scary to know that the smell did not come from down the street on 5th Avenue, but instead came from way on the west side of Columbus.
