NEWARK, Ohio —The mayor of one Ohio city says he’s adding firefighters and police officers to the city payroll even during tight times.

Newark Mayor Bob Diebold says there are some sacred things a city shouldn’t cut.

Diebold says the city will make reductions elsewhere next year, including less money spent on building and ground maintenance.

The overall city budget of $31 million will shrink about $300,000 from last year.

Other Ohio cities and communities have announced plans to reduce their safety forces or freeze hiring, including Columbus, Toledo, Warren and Montgomery County.
