Ohio Nursing Homes Disagree With Poor Ratings
COLUMBUS, Ohio—The nursing home industry in Ohio is decrying a Web site put out by the federal government that gives facilities a rating based on a five-star system.
Nearly half of Franklin County’s facilities received a one-star rating—which means much below average, NBC 4‘s Mikaela Hunt reported.
Pete Van Runkle, president of the Ohio Health Care Association, said the Bush administration rushed the system out and they’ve oversimplified a rating system that scores the centers, when they should be focusing on the complexities and fine detail that every center deals with.
Van Runkle is trying to steer families away from using that system when it comes time to pick a nursing home for a loved one.
He suggests the database on the Ohio Department Of Aging Web site and visiting facilities in person.

My father-in-law was in Westmoreland Place, as well. He was treated very well. The staff were wonderful. My in-laws choose to take him home where he later died. This experience was very hard and would have been, in my opinion; easier if he would have stayed at Westmoreland Place where people are trained to take care of people. This brings me to a bigger point, the staff at Westmoreland Place are human beings taking care of other human beings. Mistakes are going to happen, but I feel knowing the staff at Westmoreland Place it is never their intentions. My Mother has Alzheimer’s Disease and is living at home. Commendable by far for her caretakers, but I feel she would be better at Westmoreland Place with trained professionals, not to mention the love and care that they give to residents and their families.
My father-in-law was in Westmoreland, Chillicothe Ohio; Finally took him in my own home after he suffered two falls, bruising everywhere, and a generally filthy room. The staff, while they’re some decent ones, were uncaring, had no answers, and generally have no time for the family. Because of his progressive detioration, he is now at Traditions in Chillicothe-a simply clean, friendly, and well operated home. I believe there is a reason for the rating system and hope no loved ones go through what i had to. Westmoreland should be shut down!
