Victim: ‘Someone Shot My Buddy’

NEW MARSHFIELD, Ohio—A man went to his friend’s house for a visit and was fatally shot early Sunday.

It was a chaotic scene, according to Athens County sheriff’s deputies.

There was a shootout between a homeowner and several suspects whom deputies said were at the home to commit a robbery.

Several suspects tried to gain entrance into a New Marshfield trailer home early Sunday morning, deputies said.

“They come to the door and wanted in,“ homeowner Bill Osbourne said. “I said, ‘You ain’t going in my house.‘ He pulled a gun on me. He said, ‘Yeah, I am.‘ I said, ‘No, you ain’t.‘ “

Osbourne said he and the suspect struggled and he grabbed the gun out of the suspect’s hand.

Osbourne said the suspects took off and he started shooting at them.

While Osbourne and the suspects both were shooting, Osbourne’s friend Donnie Putman pulled up to the house in a vehicle.

According to Athens County Sheriff Patrick Kelly, Putman was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Putman was struck by a bullet and later died.

“Someone shot my buddy, and we got to find out who that is,“ Osbourne said.
   
Deputies were on the scene before the suspects could flee the area.

Six males were arrested and were charged in the Sunday incident: Philip Boler of New Marshfield was charged with murder and aggravated robbery. Mahut M. Osman of Columbus was charged with murder and aggravated robbery. Abdi Abdifatah of Columbus was charged with murder and aggravated robbery. Hamda Jama, of Columbus was charged with aggravated robbery. Eric Fussner of Nelsonville was charged with aggravated robbery. A 17-year-old juvenile also was charged. 

The Athens County sheriff’s office at first named Mohamud Jama of Columbus as one of those charged. The sheriff met with Jama who assisted investigators in identifying Osman. Charges were corrected to identify Osman as the person charged in Putman’s murder.

The adults were transported to the Southeast Ohio Regional Jail in Nelsonville. 

The adults were scheduled to appear in Athens County municipal court at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

The incident remained under investigation.

Local authorities said narcotics were confiscated.

Alvarez asked Osbourne whether or not illegal activity happened at his trailer.

“No. No, there wasn’t anything illegal in there,“ Osbourne said.
