City Council Considers Pitbull Ban—Again

For the second time in a year, Whitehall City Council is discussing a possible Pitbull ban in the city.

WHITEHALL, Ohio—For the second time in a year, Whitehall City Council is discussing a possible Pitbull ban in the city.

Councilmember Jacquelyn Thompson reintroduced her efforts last week to get the breed out of the city.  She says legislation last year forced Pitbull owners and other dogs considered “vicious” to put up 6-foot fences, take out liability insurance, and get a microchip implanted in the dogs.

Thompson says the legislation is not working—especially after a few more dog attacks this summer.

Another council member says Thompson bringing this back to the table creates hysteria, adding that the new ordinance is working, and will work even more as code enforcers continue to work the streets.

Those against a breed ban say it punishes obedient dogs and responsible owners.

The topic will be a main point for discussion Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

Buckeye guy what you are saying is completely and honestly the truth. I have had the pleasure of owning a German Shepherd Dog who parents were war dogs (not dogs that would wage war on other dogs and people) and served in the military protecting our soldiers and serving for so many other reasons, not only GSD’s but Rottweiler, Pit Bulls and Dobermans.
People PLEASE educate yourselves on each and every breed before you condemn them. Look at the Westminster Dog Show; they are all at that show. They are all therapy dogs, search & rescue dog as well as Pilot Dogs. We need to put our energies to convicting the people who cause the dog to do such horrible things and make those people to pay dearly then I truly feel we would not have this problem that we have today. You also have to get rid of the Puppy Mill Breeders as they do not care how they treat or vet care their dogs. They breed for the dollar not for the betterment of the breed.
DON’T CONDEM THE BREED CONDEM THE DEED! Take a good long look at where the problems all start from; it’s called the stupid human factor.
How about the Fier Fighter that hung his dogs up in the basement on the close line and shot each one 11 times because he was going on vacation. One would not die so he shot it several more times.

re:comment left by buckeye kid
have you ever owned a pit bull?
or even known anyone that has?
or are you relying only on the information you see on the news?
on the news they only show the pitbulls that ignorant owners have abused and neglected and trainned to be vicious no one wants to talk about the pitbulls that are loyal family pets.
my sister has 5 pitbulls when my son was a baby he would ride it through the house.
I have a brendle pit and i trust her completely i know she would never hurt anyone unless she felt someone was trying to hurt myself or my children which is what any dog would do.
pitbulls should not be destroyed people that dont have enough common sense to own a dog should.
pitbulls were not bred to fight and kill anymore than a cat was it is ignorant owners that train them to be that way.
a pitbull once was awarded a medal of honor for serving in a war and warning our american soldiers that the enemy was coming, but according to you this was a dog that was bred to kill ?
why did he not attempt to kill any american soldiers rather than warn them that the enemy was coming??

It is irresponsible owners and ridiculous councilmembers.Quite frankly, alot of the posters on here would HATE any/all dogs. And I saw this councilperson on Channel 4 last night,it’s easy to see that(like a child)negative attention is worse than no attention at all.

Everyone needs to get their facts straight, Pitbulls were originally bred to heard bulls NOT to fight. Pitbulls are the most loyal, loving, caring, gentle dog you can find…BEST family pet you can have…Just because idiots like to be mean to them and raise them to be mean doesnt mean they all are vicious! People need to wake up and realise what the real problem is! THEMSELVES! These animals are as good as their owners make them! ANY DOG can be taught to be mean and to bite people…most of you people that say that they are all mean and turn are just nieve to the truth and most likely have NEVER even known a pitbull in your life…what is this world coming to? Pitbulls have just as much right to live as any other dog or person or animal for that matter. BAN STUPID PEOPLE NOT PITBULLS!!!!

These dogs are not to blame for the way they were raised or treated. Ban the deed not the breed. These dogs have been the victims for years, Look at Vick’s dogs all have a new leash on life because they were given the chance. And if you let them ban one breed it will not stop until there are NO dogs. It will continue and never stop. May I be the type of person my pitbulls think I am!

ban bad owners not the dogs. i have two,and no kids however when my 5 and 7 yr old nephews come to visit they do as they want to the babies(pull tails, ride them, and play) and the dogs love them. we need to ban bad parents like the fellow with rodent bites on baby, or dad starting fires with 12 yr old. there are laws for the owners that are not responcible so lets enforce them with a little bite ie jail time and mayb curb the problem a bit. i dont see how we can blame a dog any more than a kid as all they know is what they learn from parent/owner. who knows what will be next with this lady and what she may not like and choose to ban.

Man is she a beast to look at. http://www.ci.whitehall.oh.us/CouncilMembers.aspx.

Flood her mailbox Jthompson@cityofwhitehall.com.

Isn’t this equivalent to racism?

How about she go down to Columbus All Breed Training club and see how vicious the pit bulls are there?

I’m so sick of this! Any dog can be vicious.  It’s the owners that make them the way they are! If raised right they wouldn’t be mean dogs.
So whats next? Are they going to ban doxies too because a cop shot one thinking he was being attacked? Or Jack Russells because they are hyper dogs?  When are these people going to realize the REAL problem?  Irresponsible pet owners, that’s the problem!!!

It needs to be harder to get a dog. Not more expensive, but harder. I am sick and tired of people who get dogs who don’t take it to the vet, don’t bother to train/socialize it, or have it live in uncomfortable conditions all because you wanted a dog. There should be a test, a background check and more for potential dog owners. It’s a shame the pit bull was glamorized for fighting and took on this role for the punks and drug dealers who really just get it for protection or basically fashion to show they are tough. Having almost ANY dog is a good theft deterrent and nobody cares if you look tough. For the record, I have a German Shepherd/Akita puppy, 9 mos, that is labeled as an aggressive breed but is not even slightly mean. I feel sorry for the responsible and good pit bull owners who get a bad name from the wrong people mixed with the wrong choice of dog.

All breeds can bite, and all of them can be lethal.

The problem lies with the people, not the breeds, whether its owners who don’t control their dogs, criminals who foster viciousness or grandparents who forget their dog might not react as kindly to a grandchild as they might hope.
