LANCASTER, Ohio—An officer fatally shot a woman early Thursday after police said she refused to drop her weapon and stop her approach.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.
Lancaster police received a 911 call from 703 Garfield Ave. at about 6:02 a.m.
The caller said a female was tearing up the apartment and had taken a couple of lamps and a sweeper into the bathroom.
The caller said the woman told him she was going to put them in the tub with her.
The dispatcher could hear yelling and screaming in the background, and the caller said the woman was hitting him.
The first-responding officer arrived at the apartment and determined the situation called for an immediate response, an official release said.
While the officer attempted to determine what was happening, the woman resident came at the officer with a knife, according to police.
The officer warned the female to drop the knife. The officer shot the woman with his duty weapon when she refused to drop the knife and stop her approach toward the officer, per an official release.
Medics transported the woman to the Fairfield Medical Center where she later was pronounced dead.
The woman later was identified by police as 29-year-old Misty Dawn Shook.
Anyone with information on the incident was encouraged to call LPD at 740-687-6680.

DDeal,
Are you serious??? Shot to the leg?? Let someone come towards you with a knife and see if you have the ability to aim for a part of the body with less mass and actully hit the target. Taser’s often fail and if this officer would have tried and it failed the community would have had a funeral with for an officer and in all likelyhood she would have been shot by other responding officers. Officer’s in Ohio get a lot of training for dealing with the mentally ill but what are they supposed to do if someone tries to kill them??? No one feels worse than that officer, trust me. So unless you have had the unfortunate experience of having to take a human life or use deadly force, don’t judge. You have no idea the fear and adreniline that happens when you are faced with life and death. I feel terrible for the husband and his child but I would have felt worse for the officer’s family if they had to bury him when he was just trying to pay the bills and be a good role model for his children. Get a grip and sto judging law enforcement unless you are willing to wear the badge and deal with the crap they put up with.
This is not a case of suicide by cop. This is a case of a woman with mental disorder in distress. This goes to show that our police forces across the country especially in Ohio need more training when it comes to mentally ill individuals. It is so sad a husband without a wife and a child without a mother.I believe other force such as a taser or maybe a shot to the leg could have been used, instead of shooting the woman five times. Rest In Peace Misty!
Have you ever heard of the term “Suicide by Cop”? This is what this girl did. She obviously had some type of a mental disorder and was in the process of setting up her ‘suicide scene when the police arrived. So, she decided to make it easier on herself and have someone else do the dirty work for her.
My sympathies go out to her family. She didn’t receive the mental health she needed before it was too late. I hope her family can move past this and be stronger in the future from this tragic incident.
I have much sympathy for her husband, but i heard him on the news say that she did nothing and got shot, but she did do something, she lunged towards the officer with a knife and the officer responded by doing what he was trained to do. I’m not saying that is wasn’t tragic but you can’t fault the officer. she’s in my prayers.
