A local mother says her son learned a “new” word after getting a toy in his Happy Meal.

COLUMBUS, Ohio —The movie “Ice Age” is popular with children, but one cartoon character has one Columbus woman upset –- thinking the Happy Meal toy from the movie is using foul language.

While it may be obvious to some that the talking toy is saying, “Everybody loves Sid,” it wasn’t so clear to Chequela Bowman. She thought the character, a sloth from the “Ice Age” movies, said “Everybody loves [expletive].”

Bowman said Wednesday she went through the drive-through at the McDonald’s near the airport.

After her 2-year-old son ate his meal, he had a new favorite word.

“My youngest came around and said, ‘[expletive], [expletive]’ and I was like, ‘Why’s he saying that?’ and he’s like, ‘Listen to the toy,’ “ Bowman said.

In an attempt to diffuse the issue, Bowman called the McDonald’s corporate office and by late afternoon had not received much response.

Wednesday evening, McDonald’s sent NBC 4 a statement stating, “The phrase ‘Everybody loves Sid’ featured in the Sid The Sloth Happy Meal toy, was provided to us by FOX, directly from the film, which is rated PG.”

McDonald’s selection process ensures the phrases selected to be featured in our Happy Meal toys are consistent with the stringent standards that we attribute to all of our Happy Meal toy offerings.

“I just hope that they take them from the shelf and don’t sell them anymore until they correct the problem because it sounds too much like, ‘Everybody loves [expletive],‘ “ Bowman said.

Why is no one offended that this “nonstory” is made into a story at all?  Do you think that this “lady” called NBC to advise them of what she thought this kids toy, from a place that deals with children and wants their business, said.  Do you think when she dropped the same word she thought her TWO year old son said, four times in an interview.  Said that her two year old said it twice, and that he just picked it up after getting a toy?  Please.  This woman is thinking HOT COFFEE all the way.  Then she “attempted” to call McDonalds corporation for the camera.  Oh please, that would be called a set up shot.  She wants the toys “pulled” and “not sold” until the problem is corrected.  I say to correct the problem, it would have to start with her.  It is a society that is too quick to jump at certain words, phrases, beliefs or ideas.  Everyone always assumes the worse.  Not everyone is trying to put someone down, as some may think and believe.  They are too worried about their chip on their own shoulder and being “left behind” because of what they think everyone else thinks of them.  No one is upset that my comments were stricken as “racism” and the comments didn’t “fit the statement” what so ever.  It’s odd that people will cry out that something is wrong, when they don’t even know what it means.

Well Ms. IKNOWEVERYTHING, why didn’t someone ask what I meant?  If there was ANY confusion, wouldn’t it be smart to ask before making assumptions?  I would leave that up to you to find out if she is “sweet & chewy”, that doesn’t interest me.  If you refer to your man (if you like men) as a “teeny weeny” I would assume that is between you and him.  I don’t get offended easily.  I didn’t say I knew her address, did I??  I think you are quick to jump to conclusions and I find that very funny.

So, wise one, what exactly DID you mean by “ghetto chicklet?“ Did you really mean she was sweet & chewy?

As a woman, I would be offended if anyone called me a “chicklet” in the same way a man might be offended if called a “teeny weeny.“ Calling a woman a “chick,“ let alone a “chicklet” is offensive. Deal with it.

And if “ghetto” is just a neighborhood to you, how do you know her address? Did I miss that in the story? Why didn’t you call her a “North-Sider?“

Kathy, you’re offended by the word Ghetto- why?  People live in them.  All around the world.  Also how can you be offended over the word “Chicklet” when I took it from a piece of gum that you have probably eaten in your life.  Get over yourself.  This “woman” was out for a quick buck.  Point blank.  It turned “racist” when Denise Yost didn’t do her own research by using a dictionary and said my comments were “racist”.  If you check Websters.com and look up the word, you would find that it doesn’t mean what in her mind, or yours, really think it does.  Racism (as defined by Websters.com) “a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultureal or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others”.  So how is “ghetto chickelet” racist?  Please expalin.  Then also after you try to do that, tell me what race I am please.  It appears Ms. Yost likes to block and stir the pot into a bad situation when she is unable to defend herself.  This is being picked up by another news outlet in this city- not the “Sid says” but the fact that one news person who should be able to determine what words mean, and makes a bad call and doesn’t even have the ability to respond when called out on it.  Nor did her station to the email that I sent asking about it.  I have copied the logs and kept the comments to prove my point.

Amen, Kathy. Everyone SHOULD be offended. When I voiced my opinion of the posters, I sank to their level with name-calling, so my comments were yanked with the rest. As they should have been.

To those crying that “we” are making it a race issue, you are wrong. The posters who made assumptions about the mother based on one photo were the ones making it a race issue.

Anyone who didn’t complain or call those people on it should be just as ashamed as the ones who made the horrible comments.

what in the world is “banded”?

While it is obvious that the one over reacted, I am so offended by the comments posted. I’ve read that she is “Ghetto xxxxx”, comments about where the father is, comments on her on welfare, comments that she needs to get a job, etc. Does anyone think these aren’t offensive comments? What story were you reading that said she was an out-of-work, welfare check cashing, Ghetto living mother. Everyone should be offended by these comments, but jls1967 should be banded from this site.
