MARION, Ohio —Today is a somber anniversary for a local community.  It has been five years since Marion County Sheriff Deputy Brandy Winfield was killed in the line of duty.

Early on the morning of October 14, 2004, 29-year old Winfield was responding to a disabled vehicle on U.S 23.  A short time later deputies spotted Winfield’s cruiser overturned in a ditch and found him shot inside.  He later died at the hospital.

Winfield’s killer, Juan Carlos Cruz was arrested two days later and is now serving 30 years to life for Deputy Winfield’s murder.

Tonight a candlelight vigil will be held in Winfield’s honor at 6 p.m. at his gravesite in the Marion Cemetery, the community is welcome to attend.

The Winfields have sacrificed a lot, and had some very unfortunate accidents in the last 5 years.  I hope the next five years are much more fortunate for them.
