COLUMBUS, Ohio—The city’s public safety director announced his decision Thursday to terminate firefighter David Santuomo from the Columbus Division of Fire.

It’s a story NBC 4 has been reporting on for months.

The Columbus Division of Fire received many complaints and concerns after the conviction of Columbus firefighter David Santuomo.

The division completed its internal investigation, and Fire Chief Ned Pettus recommended termination Thursday, July 9.

Public Safety Director Mitchell J. Brown reviewed Pettus’ recommendation and upheld it Thursday, July 16.

“After careful consideration of the relevant facts in the matter of firefighter David Santuomo, it is my decision to uphold the recommendation of Fire Chief Ned Pettus Jr. and terminate firefighter David Santuomo from the position of firefighter for the City of Columbus, Ohio, Department of Public Safety, Division of Fire,“ Brown said in a statement to the media.

The termination is effective immediately, Department of Public Safety Executive Assistant Antone White said.

Santuomo has 10 days to appeal the decision via civil service, if he chooses, according to White.

Santuomo pleaded guilty to two charges of animal cruelty and one count of possessing criminal tools Wednesday, June 24. All three are misdemeanor charges.

Judge Harlan Hale sentenced the firefighter to 90 days in jail, five years of probation and a five-year ban on having or living with an animal.

Hale said Santuomo would not be allowed to own firearms and was required to get alcohol, drug and mental-health counseling.

Santuomo’s sentence also included writing an apology letter that will appear in International Fire Fighters Magazine and 200 hours of community service.

Local 67 said earlier the misdemeanor crimes were not an issue of job performance.

Mytwocentsworth——my observations have been that, observations I have personally made. I have personally complained about 2 firefighters who came to work reeking of alcohol and to keep their jobs, they had to go to alcohol rehab so puhhlleezzeee do not act like I am some hick who is spreading rumors, I speak with the facts.  There are ff in your dept who have been convicted of domestic violence.  I did NOT say all firefighters are a bunch of drunken wife beating slobs but as with every occupation, there are some, not everyone holds themselves to the high standard that you say you do.  Most firefighters are dedicated, law abiding citizens and are an asset to their department and the community.  To be angry because one tried to point out that the fire dept like any other dept does have some problems is ludacris.  You want to know my name, give me yours and I will give you mine.  I have nothing to hide, not even my name.  I simply stated the truth and I feel the man should be helped, not further punished.  And the thing about this country, I am entitled to my opinion as are you.  Now please have a good evening and keep yourself safe as I do care about our firefighters.

To Flameout and Tinks:
One guy embarasses the whole department, and somehow you have the gall to suggest that there is a systematic problem with wife beating and DUI’s.  First of all, isn’t the internet great, where you can make accusations without identifying yourself, or providing any proof?  Secondly, if you took a cross-section of 1,514 non-firefighters, you would find the same problems in that group, most likely on a greater scale.  I agree we should be held to a higher standard, but the point is 99% of us already hold ourselves to that standard!  We take our commitment and the responsibility of our job seriously, we perform our duties with the utmost professionalism in the craziest of situations, and we are eager and proud to have the opportunity to help the public whenever we’re needed. To categorize us as a bunch of drunks and wife beaters based on something your wife’s uncles barber told you is at best unfair,  and definitely inaccurate.

This bozo was a public relations nightmare for the city, the fire department and the union, and they all wanted him gone. Remember the racist lady cop with the Youtube messages two summers ago? Same deal - the union held the door open while the Safety Director gave her the boot (OK, so she retired). Sometimes, you just make a mistake in who you hire and you have to correct that mistake.

Frankie, a judge and a jury is charged with the duty of finding a person guilty or innocent by evidence presented at a trial and that person must be found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt from a preponderance of evidence.  Those of us who are writing on here are not a judge or jury and we have not been presented with any facts other than what the media has deemed we should know.  I never believe half of what the media puts out there because it is biased and often presented without all the facts.  No I did not look up this man’s record, he has been punished for any thing in his past.  What this man did was a misdemeanor, not a felony and one should not be fired for misdemeanors.  What this man did is no worse than those who abandoned their animals——when you abandon them, you might as well take a gun and shoot them because you are basically killing them.  If he had abandoned his animals we would never have heard about it and he would have his job.  And I believe had it been a busy news day, we would still not know what he did and he would have his job but because the media had nothing else better to report that day, this man is punished more than once.  If this had anything to do with the duties of his job, I would say it was a different matter, but it doesn’t.  If you take all of the hysteria and drama out of this, people would feel differently.  Why is killing a dog any worse than killing a horse, a cow, a pig, a sheep, a rabbit, a squirrel, and on and on?

Have you ever looked through the eyes of another animal? How do you know what they understand and don’t understand? Just because we evolved dosen’t make them any less important than US.

My physical body may be animal in nature, it breathes, it eats, it sleeps, and it bleeds. But my mind and awareness raises me above the level of an animal. My ability to look at a star and understand it is a ball of gas thousands of light years away, or my abilty to even ponder the morality of killing something else raises me to a level my dog or cat can never be, it makes me human! I have hopes and dreams and can look ahead years from now and see a future. No animal can do that. Therefore I have a responsibility to not be cruel to my PETS and to be kind to those don’t understand the difference between humanity and an animal. Killing and animal can be wrong but it is not now nor will it ever be MURDER! I have a responsibilty to respect other living things, because as a HUMAN I understand morality. No other creature on this earth has this ability. Use your HUMANITY and ponder whether your dog can do the same thing. This is why there is a huge difference between killing animals and humans. Bottom line, I deplore what this firefighter did and think he is suffering fair consequences for his bad actions, but he is not worth hating nor is it correct to compare his bad actions to the deplorable crime of murding a human being. I’m sorry to those who don’t understand this.

Many serial killers were animal killers as well. It speaks a lot about a persons character to say the least. I live very close to this firehouse and have seen firsthand the way this man’s fellow firefighters at station 27 have been treated. I’m glad he no longer works there and his fellow employees can finally hold their head up high again.

All you ones comparing animal life to human life…Have you people never heard of respect for all living things?  Just because an animal is not human, that doesn’t make it any less worthy.  This was not hunting for food or putting a sick and dying animal out of suffering…This was MURDER!!

Is HUMANS not an animal? Last time I checked we are and that puts us right there with DOGS, CATS, RABBITS, CHICKENS, APES. MURDER is MURDER, granted there is not a huge period of mourning for a dog or cat and the impact on a family is ot the same, but it is still MURDER.
