Some Ohio Dems Calling For Tax Hike

» 3 Comments | Post a Comment

COLUMBUS, Ohio
A small group of Democratic lawmakers is splitting from Gov. Ted Strickland and calling for a tax hike to help plug Ohio’s budget deficit.

Four Democrats in the Ohio House said Tuesday that Ohio can’t cut its way out of a $3.2 billion budget deficit without doing devastating damage to the social safety net.

Strickland and House Speaker Armond Budish, both Democrats, and Republican Senate President Bill Harris have said they don’t want to raise taxes.

State Rep. Bob Hagan of Youngstown said he and his colleagues were speaking out to let leaders know that everything should be on the table to solve the deficit. Hagan also said the tax changes promoted by Republicans in 2005 - and now supported by Strickland - have failed to produce jobs and have left the state with a budget hole.

Typical headline telling half the story…

Democrats want to DELAY a TAX CUT to those making OVER $200K annually. Whoever wrote this headline/story sees the delay of a cut as a hike.

If you make more than $200K per year, you would see it as a tax hike. If this is you, you probably never had to use a public library and I can understand your sentiments.

If you make LESS than $200K per year, THIS PROPOSAL AND IDEA DOES NOT AFFECT YOU IN ANY NEGATIVE WAY. It DOES NOT raise your taxes, you will NOT see less money out of your paycheck (for this at least) and a resource available to ALL Ohioans and thousands of jobs will remain secure.

From one of those Democrats: “Make the case that the final ‘phase in’ of the Taft tax cut passed in 2005, which goes mostly to those making $200-250,000 = about $400 to 500 million dollars be delayed. Delaying that tax cut could help restore lib. cuts, reduce state lay-offs, restore the needed dollars for Ohio food bank.“

BS, there are hundreds of millions if not billions being wasted on pork barrel projects they could cut.  Anyone voting for a tax increase in this economy must not be re-elected next term.
