Strickland Poised To Sign Human Trafficking Bill

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland is expected this week to sign into law a bill that would increase penalties for crimes such as kidnapping if they aid in human trafficking.  The bill attempts to combat a proliferation in the sex trade in northwest Ohio. It would create a new “human trafficking” specification that prosecutors could attach to related crimes to increase penalties.

The specification would mandate jail time for convictions on promoting prostitution, illegally using a minor in pornography and endangering children.  The bill recommends that the Ohio attorney general establish a commission to study potential changes to Ohio law to combat the sex trade. Incoming Attorney General Richard Cordray says he supports such a commission.  The bill stops short of creating a new crime for sex trafficking.
