Swimming Pools Debut This Weekend
COLUMBUS, Ohio – There are 800 swimming pools the Columbus Health Department inspects every year. Last year almost 140 pools were closed, a majority because of water chemistry, some because of unsafe practices. The Columbus Health Department is serious about pool safety this year. They are offering a 2-hour pool and spa safety training course for public pool managers.
The Columbus Health Department inspects pools year round, testing the PH and Chlorine levels. After that, each facility gets a scorecard. The same ones used at restaurants. Green means the pool has passed the inspection and yellow means the business is in the enforcement process. If you see a red card, which means the owners didn’t fix the problems. White means the business is operating under probation. If the health department ever closes an establishment, it does have to be re-inspected prior to re-opening.
The Columbus Health Department wants to remind everyone not to swim when you are sick or have diarrhea. This is especially important for kids in diapers. Germs like cryptosporidium can spread easily in the water and make people sick. Don’t swallow pool water and rinse off before getting in the pool.

I just found this video on You Tube that really shows how germs and viruses spread. It is so cool. It’s meant for kids but I even learned a lot!
