CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland’s city council has voted to outlaw text-messaging while driving in the city.
The proposal approved by council members Monday night now goes to Mayor Frank Jackson and would take effect 90 days after he signs it. Members of the mayor’s administration have voiced support for the measure.
First-time violators caught texting behind the wheel would be fined $100. A second offense would cost $250 and any additional citations would bring penalties of up to $500.
The ban was proposed by City Councilman Zack Reed, who says it will make Cleveland’s streets safer. He plans to petition the Ohio Legislature to pass a bill to prohibit texting while driving statewide.
At least eight other states already have similar laws.

i agree, we should take everything away, if your driving pay attention, i seen to many people yelling and screaming at there radio as well, that needs to go no one should drive with small children, there crying and screaming can keep you from driving safe. i’ve been driving a semi for 26y, texting isn’t the problem it’s just people just being to at relaxed with there car’s. eating reading book’s, playing on a laptop, haveing sex, puting on makeup, watching tv. you will never get everything out of there hand’s to make them drive safe. after we get rid of texting we should get rid of drive thur’s.
Only really ignorant people would say we don’t need laws like this and a law that FORBIDS cellphone use while driving. Follow anyone on a phone and you would easily feel they were driving while IMPAIRED. If you think at the the time of an accident you can lie and say no you weren’t not on your phone it takes just a few minutes to have your cellphone records pulled and you face not only traffic charges but civil penalties in a lawsuit most can’t imagine.
Wise up and quit whining and hang up the STOOPID phone. What can’t wait till later to talk about or text ??????????
This is nice, but it’s totally unnecessary. There are already laws on the book about not having control of one’s vehicle that would apply to anyone either texting or talking on the phone. Driving requires two hands, two eyes on the road, and no distractions. If the police would only enforce the laws already on the books, no municipality would be without sufficient funds to do whatever it wanted to, and the roads would be a lot safer.
Talking on a cell phone is dangerous enough and I have followed behind many cars driving irratically as a result of this.
I can’t imagine someone having the ability to drive safely and text message at the same time. I absolutely agree that text messaging while driving should be against the law.
Why does someone always have to bring the law enforcers into the posts?
That laptop in their cars may save your life someday!
this is nice,, but if they don’t want texting or typing.. then let take the computers out of the police cars too…
I have seen them typing away while driving down the road….
