WOOSTER, Ohio—An Amish girl injured when a pickup truck hit her buggy has died following the accident that also killed two of her siblings. The Ohio State Highway Patrol says 13-year-old Mary Yoder died Saturday after being taken to Akron Children’s Hospital. The girl was riding with a sister and brother in a horse-drawn cart Thursday night in Holmes County in northeast Ohio when they were hit from behind by a pickup truck. The patrol says 14-year-old Fannie Yoder and 15-year-old Ivan Yoder were killed at the scene. The driver of the pickup told police he couldn’t see the cart because of glare on his windshield from the setting sun.

the road is for motor vehicles. yes we do own the road.. we pay taxes for their maintenance. Some of those drivers buggy’s are handled by 7 yr old children. hello… can you drive your little go cart on it?? every vehicle of every sort needs to be licensed (anything with a round wheel)including slow tractors??..,, why do we treat a few differently(by making exceptions)? as for slowing down driving into sun.. get real..i am sure they did slow down,,pleaseeee. horse/buggy versus truck,, 10 mph they still loser.
I live in the Amish community, I have Amish for neighbors. I drive amongst them every day and let me tell you. Some of them have great light systems on their buggies and you can see them for miles. Others have little lanterns that you can barely see even when you are on top of them. Even if I drive 45 miles per hour (10 miles under the legal limit) and I pop up over a hill and there going 5 miles per hour…its all over with. I know they need to get where they need to be but I do beleive they should not be allowed on the roads unless it is daylight hours UNLESS they have the light systems that actually look like a cars lights. I have seen many children in buggies some as young as 8. I think there should be an age limit also.
It is not a drivers fault if they are not doing anything illegal and they hit a buggy.
If he couldn’t see, why couldn’t he just slow down? I wasn’t there, wasn’t in the truck, but if you can’t see due to the sun, you should slow down and anticipate…especially in Amish country. I guess that’s too much to ask of people nowadays. Awful.
i cannot believe the people out there do we all not have the right to drive and commute how we want.people need to watch closer and be careful and its not only your life that u have in your hands when you choose to drive but everybody else on the road. quit blaming the amish we are the ones that are always in a hurry we always have places to go and for the most part somebody else is left to raise our children while we work to afford the fast moving vechiles that takes the life of innocent people. do yourself and everybody else a favor SLOW DOWN!!!!!!!!!
Let’s talk ‘ignorance of facts’...
How many years have you been driving a car, or, better yet, what year was the first automobile invented? The Amish have been around, in the US, since the early 18th century. The first gasoline powered automobile was not built until 1885.
So, just because the Amish choose not to move forward regarding technology, they should be punished? As responsible, R-E-S-P-O-N-S-I-B-L-E…drivers, we should show the Amish respect.
And You sure managed to get your ‘dig’ in regarding the fact they do not pay ‘road tax’. First of all, their ‘vehicle’ does not weigh what your vehicle weighs, nor does it use oil or gasoline.
People, you GROW UP and accept the fact that there are and always will be people in the world who do not conform to how you believe things should be.
alexis, driving these buggies is part of their culture and religion - an attempt to retain simplicity in their lives so that they may focus more on their devotion to religion. Wheelchairs on the road - I have seen them. People want to get in their motor chair and drive it up and down high street, I see it all the time. And as far as the victim mentality, do you seriously think such peaceful people pull out in front of you to spite you? And define pull out in front of you.. do you want them to wait because you’re two miles down the road going 55 miles per hour? Sounds like you think you own the road.
Okay, I grew up in a rural area heavily populated by Amish people, and had many near-death experiences both at night and during daylight hours with buggies.
The fact of the matter is, religion has zero to do with it, and anyone who wants to get up on a high horse about it does nothing but demonstrate their ignorance of the facts.
It is unlawful to break the speed limit in two ways. The first way is, obviously, going too fast. But a motor vehicle can also be pulled over for going too slow. Why then, can a buggy, with no headlights, taillights, turn signals, horn, etc. be specially privileged to travel down highways at speeds of ten miles per hour? Half the time I can WALK faster than a buggy. What if my religion dictates I must walk down the middle of the road wearing all black at night? That’s irrelevant, because this is not a religious issue.
Another problem I have with buggies on roads SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED for the ease and use of motorized vehicles, is that the fees from our driver’s licenses and plates etc. go towards road maintenance. Amish people pay no road taxes and are not required to have driver’s licenses.
If we are looking for tips on how to screw over the state governments, look no further than the Amish I guess. You gotta hand it to them for that at least.
But driving in this country is not a right, it is a privilege. That is why we have licenses, and rules that must be followed for safety and convenience.
for all those who think buggies are not a road hazard…..facts are facts get real! and who brought religion into it? i thought we were talking about a road accident religion has nothing to do with it. and also i dont ever think iv seen a wheel chair on the road. This kind of thing is going to continue to happen until something is done about it and young children should not be driving even a buggy. I have had buggies purposely pull out in front of me or they drive in the middle of the road like they own it so you can not safely pass them, no matter how cautious you are in those areas buggies are very difficult to see ESPECIALY AT DUSK WITH SUN GLARE.
my heart goes out to all the victoms involved.
Please quit making excuses for the driver of the motor vehicle. Has he never driven into the setting sun in his life and had to take appropriate precautions. He is 100% guilty of negligence and has taken 3 innocent lives directly because of this negligence. Punish him to the fullest extent of the law. Sadly, in this country, taking the lives of 3 innocent humans doesn’t get the proper punishment thanks to spineless jurists, and the misappropriation of the meaning of our constitution.
Givemeabreak I think you hit the nail on the head. The people that want the buggies off the roads think that they own the road they do not slow down for school zones or pull over for emergency vehicles. I think that those drivers should be what is taken off of the roads.
