MADD, Law Enforcement Urge Holiday Driving Safety

COLUMBUS, Ohio—17 years ago Monday, Lois Briggs laid her daughter to rest.

A drunk driver took the life of her daughter Amy in 1992, and Lois has made it her life’s work to get the message out on the dangers and death associated with drunk driving.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving, along with state law enforcement agencies, teamed up Monday for the Tie One On for safety campaign.

The hope is that the red ribbons will be a reminder to always have a designated driver and buckle up this holiday season.

Last year more than 40 percent of the holiday fatal crashes involved alcohol, according to MADD.

The campaign also means increased saturation patrols and checkpoints.

“These are more than statistics. These are real families. They come to our roll calls during our checkpoints so we really understand why we are out there,“ said Deputy Carl Booth of the Franklin County DUI Task Force.

For families, picking up the pieces after a deadly drunken driving crash can be extremely difficult.

For Lois, she watched her 2-year-old grandson grow up without knowing his mother.

Now 19 years old, Cameron has a tattoo with his mother’s name, but few memories.

The Briggs family, MADD, and the law enforcement community want to remind everyone, don’t drink and drive, buckle up and be safe this holiday season.
