Troopers Investigate Fatal Hit-Skip Accident

BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio – Troopers from the Marysville Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are seeking information on fatal crash that killed a pedestrian and critically injured a second pedestrian early Saturday morning.  Reports say at approximately 1:33 a.m., 48-year old Jeffrey Gates of Port Jefferson and 24-year old Virgil Gates of Port Jefferson were attempting to cross State Route 366 near Lakeview Harbor when they were both struck by car.

After striking both pedestrians, the vehicle fled the scene southbound on State Route 235.  Jeffrey Gates was pronounced dead on the scene and Virgil Gates was transported to Grant Medical Center by Med Flight.  The vehicle is described by witnesses as a late 80’s to mid 90;’s GM vehicle possibly a Chevrolet Celebrity or Buick.  The vehicle was reported to have dark blue patches of touch-up paint on the bottom of both passenger-side doors.  Physical evidence was collected at the scene that indicates the vehicle sustained damage to the front end as a result of the crash.
