UPPER ALINGTON, Ohio—A gas leak caused some residential evacuations, road closings and utility outages Monday afternoon.

NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS.

Upper Arlington firefighters were called to a gas leak on Wickliffe Road between Avalon and Kenyon roads just before noon.

City of Upper Arlington utility division crews were excavating to repair a sanitary sewer line when crews struck a four-inch medium-pressure gas line, causing an eight-inch tear in the pipe.

City officials contacted public utilities beforehand, but the marking was not accurate as to the exact location of the active line, the city said. Prior to the strike, crews found an old gas line that had been abandoned in place.

Mountview, Wickliffe and Ridgecliff roads were closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

Firefighters evacuated several homes in the immediate area.

Fire crews also monitored the atmosphere for explosive vapors and stood by with charged hose lines while repairs were made to the line.

Approximately 80 customers were without gas service for a time.

Columbia Gas was called to the scene and had capped the leak by 1:15 p.m.

The closings and evacuations were over by 2:15 p.m.
