COLUMBUS, Ohio—A local church is recovering from the loss of dozens of pumpkins after vandals destroyed them in one night.

The Fellowship Lutheran Church on Sawmill Road lost about $1,000 worth of pumpkins to a vandal wielding a golf club, NBC 4’s Marcus Thorpe reported.

For the last ten years, the church has given back to the community using the pumpkins as a fundraiser.

The church doesn’t pocket the money raised from the pumpkins. They put it back into programs that serve those most in need.

“I saw all of it, but someone came over and helped clean things up, left a donation and a note,” said church secretary Kris Kochheiser.

The pumpkins also benefit an Indian tribe that grows and delivers them.

“Especially since we help homeless in our community the real damage is to those with special needs,” said Pastor Michael Sayre, of Fellowship Lutheran Church.

Many in the community have already answered the church’s needs –- to fill the $1,000-gap left by the vandals.

“A friend from years ago said we’d like to buy some of your invisible pumpkins. People already heard and started by stepping up,” Sayre said.

While the damage has been done, the church is ready to stick close together and carve out some hope.

“When bad happens, good happens always turns that way,” Kochheiser said.

mpnf1979,
It would appear to me that the justice system is not what we need to be relying on to teach morals through dicipline. Better home life might or might not have helped (some people from really great homes reject what they are taught). To those who do believe, a relationship with God and a heart to follow His will is more inclined to cause a change in these actions because that is a personal choice to follow something as opposed to something that is instruced and inforced. This actually holds true even if there is no God. If whoever caused the vandalism followed a religion, say in this case Christianity, they would not be inclined to do this. So God or no God, practicing the religion would prevent this action the same way as having your own moral code, and it would be something written and pre established as opposed to having to construct your own moral code. That all being said, good could come from them wishing and praying that their God would cause whoever do this to adopt a faith that would cause them not to perpetrate again.

Oh, if only the ones who do this kind of thing would use all that energy to do good work.  Gary Royer comes to mind as an example to be followed.

MPND-I couldn’t have said it better. I agree 100%. I don’t mean to be disrespectful because I know many people believe in prayer but that alone is not going to bring about a change in the behavior of juvenile delinquents who deserve punishment. Save the prayers for the sick or injured. DANISE-I also wonder why people just can’t keep their paws off of what does not belong to them. Stealing, vandalism, destruction of someone else’s property really makes me sick because we all know how they (meaning the age group most likely to have committed this act)react when something of theirs is stolen….which begs the question-why do they think this is ok? MPNF already answered…they have no respect, no moral compass and no discipline. Whenever kids get caught these days their reasons for their actions are either because “it was fun” or the just “dont know”. Sad. Parents:Teach your kids to THINK before they DO.

What is wrong with people?  Can’t people keep their hands off of things that don’t belong to them?

I think it’s terrible that someone would destroy anyone’s property for any reason. However, being a person who is an atheist, I don’t see how praying for someone to know God’s love is the answer and the reason for any of this undeserved destruction. More than likely, it is was a kid or kids from a middle-class home who does believe in God. God isn’t the answer, better morals and some discipline is. I consider myself a morally upstanding individual and would never commit any acts of destruction or vandalism against anyone or anything. This person who did this, sounds like they need to be found and made to perform some community service for the people who would have benefited from the charitable fundraising.

It saddens me deeply to see a church of any/all faith being targeted by vandals and thieves. Many may not been raised in a home that knows of God (or other Deity). We need to pray for them all, but a special prayer for those that do not know the Love of God. If they do know God, and still choose to carry out these acts; revenge is the Lord’s and the projects the church has begun in the name of God will continue and prosper in spite of those that try to stop them.
