CENTRAL OHIO—NBC 4 reported on a warning for dog owners.
NBC 4 reported with the FAST FACTS Friday.
Veterinarians recommended another vaccination for your dog because an old disease has made a comeback.
The disease is called Lepto, and it is a bacteria that can be passed on from a wild animal, such as a raccoon or possum, to your dog through a cut or open wound.
If left untreated, dogs can develop fatal kidney failure.

I owned a beautiful female shepherd age 10 in 2004 who contracted the strain of Leptospirosis not covered by her routine yearly vaccines. We figure she got it from drinking water out of a stream running through our backyard that had been contaminated by the urine of a wild animal, raccoon etc. She was almost in complete kidney failure when my vet started questioning me. He at first thought it was just due to her age. Then he had the forsight to run the blood test to check her titers for Lepto, they were out of sight for this new strain that was not covered by the current vaccine. Thankfully due to his veterinary skills and my good care we pulled her through and she lived 2 1/2 more quality years before succumbing to heart failure. I believe that Fort Dodge vaccines now have this new strain in them. Check with your Vet.
Tell your daughter’s doctor about her exposure to both dogs and cats. Leptospirosis is zoonotic, meaning it can be passed from animals to humans or humans to animals. Also please consider toxoplasmosis from the cats; another possibility is an intestinal parasite called giardia (can be passed to dogs from wildlife, and to people from infected dogs). This is probably way out there, but did they test for Lyme disease?
I have a daughter who works in a kennel and for a vet. We also own three dogs and one cat. She has been sick for three weeks that the doctors at OSU er and her own doctor cannot find out what’s wrong. They believe she has a bacterial infection of some sort. Her symptoms are abdominal and side pain, nausea feeling, vomitted once, diahhrea, not pregnant (preg tests came back negative, headaches in the medium range of pain, just feeling lousy all the time.
Does anyone have an idea what’s wrong, could it be from her work and our pets?
Help us find out what’s wrong with her!
Thanks, from a dog lover.
ask your vet specifically if the vaccine is for the strain prevalent in your area. the combo vaccine does not cover the strain that’s been found in delaware county.
ASK YOUR VETERINARIAN - the lepto part of the vaccine used in dogs is NOT the lepto that dogs get (yeah, that’s really dumb, but true!), and there is very little cross-protection. The lepto portion of vaccines is the usual cause of bad vaccine reactions. Talk to your veterinarian first about your dog’s possibility of exposure before you stick a vaccine in him that is going to do very little good anyway.
