Web Sites Lead Bartering Comeback

COLUMBUS, Ohio—With Central Ohio households tightening their purse strings, an old-fashioned form of currency is making a comeback—bartering.

From DVDs to goods and services, Web sites are popping up to help you swap something you don’t want for something you do want.

One Web site worth checking out is Babysitterexchange.com, which lets you set up an online community among friends and neighbors and then swap everything from baby-sitting to carpooling, tutoring and pet sitting.

U-exchange.com allows you to trade services such as carpentry, cleaning and plumbing work.

Gametz.com or game trading zone is a service that lets you trade video games and video game accessories.

Avid readers may enjoy PaperbackSwap.com, which lets users trade books with others.

SwapACD.com and SwapDVD.com work just like PaperbackSwap.com and lets users swap CDs and DVDs.

Zwaggle.com is a treasure trove for parents, allowing them to swap kids’ clothes, toys and furniture.

Here’s what the site owner had to say in a recent thread, responding to a customer concern:

“A key to getting along in the forums here is rolling with the punches, laughing stuff off, not getting uptight about stuff. Once people see you getting hot and bothered, they just mess with you more because it amuses them. And, honestly, it’s pretty damn funny. Join the dark side. “

Gametz is full of trolls - in fact the site owner participates.  It is unsafe for trading anything, as the information you provide can be used against you.  I know of a number of instances where people were threatened, their families threatened, packages sent to them with unknown substances, and even employers contacted regarding untrue allegations that threatened their employment.  Language, porn and other terrible stuff that is inappropriate for children as well.

If you are an adult or have children, avoid Gametz.  It is the Craigslist of trading.

Thanks for the article! Why didn’t you include www.barterquest.com? I’ve been using that site for a couple of months now. Great way to trade goods, services and real estate.
