White Van Speaker Scheme Continues In Central Ohio

DELAWARE, Ohio—A common sales tactic known informally as the White Van Speaker Scheme appears to be continuing in Central Ohio—five months after NBC 4 first reported about the issue.

Mike, an NBC 4 viewer, said he let greed get the better of his judgment.

Mike said he paid $800 to two men who approached him in a grocery store parking lot in Delaware last week.

Out of coincidence, he needed stereo speakers and the men sold him what they claimed was a $9,500 value for just $800.

The speakers worked, but Mike said they were very low quality.

“These guys looked very legitimate. The boxes were marked MSRP. It was embedded in the boxes. Everything looked legitimate. They had invoices,“ Mike said.

Even Mike now acknowledges that if salesmen approach you in a parking lot with an offer that seems too good to be true, it usually is.

responding to ‘'whatnext’‘ comment, there are people selling dvd movies and cd’s at just about every check cashing place, right from thier trunks. I even got Harry potters half blood prince dvd two days after it came out on the big screen, and theres a smoke shop next to the bmv at morse and karl roads that sell dvd’s and cd’s that aren’t out yet, what you have to do is dress kinda poorly, and go to the back counter and ask what movies do they have, the newest ones cost about 10 bucks each. They aren’t the best quality though, it appears like someone is sitting in the audience taping the big screen, every once in a while someone passes in front of the movie.

Wow!  I can’t believe these guys are still at it!  I was approached by these scum bags way back in 1998 or 1999.  They were parked in a bank parking lot so they could approach people right after they hit the ATM when they knew you had money.  They guy in the article is correct - these guys are VERY convincing.  They said that they had the speakers left over from an installation job and that they ordered too many speakers and rather than ship them back and pay shipping, their boss told them to see if the could sell them to someone. They had the stereo components in sealed BOSE & Technics boxes, invoices, even uniforms.  They almost sucked me in.  Luckily, I listened to my instincts and walked away but I did seriously consider it.
