South-Western City Schools Makes Promises For Levy Passage

GROVE CITY, Ohio—Officials from South-Western City Schools are trying something new to gain support for Issue 2, a four-year, 8.3-mill operating levy.

Officials have written a contract with the community and it’s posted on their Web site. The contract includes things like saving money and improving scores on state report cards.

Sandy Nekoloff with the South-Western City School District says it’s no longer business as usual and a contract with the community was written up to show transparency.

It lists four goals and 12 objectives. The district says if voters pass Issue 2, they will make the money last until 2013.

If you look at the salaries of districts in the central ohio area, SWCS is one of the lowest.  And, the per pupil spending is not one of the highest in the area, but when you look at the percentage of the money brought in that is spent on students it is one of the highest in the area.  That means SWCS is spending more of it’s money on students. yes, when you look at the total it’s lower on the list, but that is because there is just not as much money to be spent.

The district has to provide an education to it’s students.  when they are not given the money to do so, that education suffers.  That is why they are making cuts to go pretty much “bare-bones”.  that means no extra-curriculars, but it also means that a lot of educational programs go by the way-side.  I really just feel sorry for the seniors if this doesn’t pass.  How many of them were hoping to get a scholarship through their sport or music program?  What about those that hoped to get an academic scholarship?  Without AP classes, that is very unlikely to happen.  That effects those students, obviously, but it really hurts our community in the long run.

And more information still….

See Page 8, SWCS, “Comprehensive Annual Financial Report”,( year ending June 30, 2008),

$149,054,282 out of $185,300,189 total budget spent went to District Wages and Benefits which makes up 82% of the District budget.

The Board pays one hundred percent of the premium for single coverage and sixty-five percent of the premium for family coverage.“

This has got to change.

Additional information . . .

Out of 16 area school districts - Columbus City School District has the highest per pupil expenditure at 13969. But met only 6 out of 30 areas for adequate yearly progress (AYP) statistics.  Spending more per pupil doesnt mean the district will do any better by the students.  SWCS is 14th in spenditure at 9336 and 13th in ayp meeting only 16 out of 30.  Reynoldsburg is 13th in expenditure but 8th overall in AYP meeting 26 of the 30 areas.

6 area school districts have per pupil expenditures less than $10000

They have allowed the union to brainwash them and have totally lost touch with reality, for the most part anyway. There are some good ones out there, just not enough, and they are afraid to break ranks.

They certainly are “schooled” in the art of propaganda. If you look at the Dispatch Forums they completely attack anyone that opposes the system as it exists!

Lots of complaining, but no real fighting. No board has the guts to stand up to the unions and risk a strike. Teachers are the Golden Child.

I was reading the contract signed by the school board…. and the ONE THING that stood out to me was that it is only valid if the levy passes (first sentence).

I think they need to reword the contract to be valid from RIGHT NOW - no matter what happens with the levy.

I want to see the books from the district. I want to see line item expenditure.  I want to see how much they are spending on toilet paper, and paper towels.

I want to see how much we are spending on janitorial staff (couldnt we get volunteers/kids to clean the schools?)

I wont be happy with someone from the state doing a check.  “oh yes , you balance - and even though you are paying $5 for a roll of toilet paper - i dont see you buying anything you dont need”
