2 Dead, 1 Child Remains Hospitalized After Serious Crash
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- NBC 4's Mike Bowersock reported on a serious accident on the city's northwest side that happened at about 6:15 this morning.
The crash remains under investigation, but it appears that a vehicle, driven by Alfonso Martinez, was traveling eastbound on Hayden Run Road, approaching the intersection of Riverside Drive. An ODOT salt truck was traveling northbound on Riverside Drive, approaching the intersection, according to police reports.
According to information gathered at the scene and from witnesses, Martinez failed to stop for a red light and entered the intersection at the same time as the salt truck.
Five people were in the car: Martinez, a pregnant Mrs. Martinez and three children.
Mrs. Martinez was trapped in the crushed car, and police told NBC 4 that she and her unborn child are dead.
The three children were taken to Nationwide Children's Hospital, and two of the children have been treated and released as of this afternoon. One of the children, a 2-year-old male remains at Children's with injuries to his skull, according to police reports.
Martinez, who police think might have been intoxicated, was taken to Riverside Hospital, Bowersock reported.
Martinez has not been charged at this time, but possible charges of OMVI (operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated) and additional criminal charges reportedly may be pending.
