[dateline] -- The investigation continues this morning after an officer is forced to fire his weapon on a suspect.

Officers were dispatched to the BP gas station at 825 E. Broad St. last night around 10:34 p.m. after the station’s clerk called and reported a robbery, NBC 4’s Mike Bowersock reported.

An officer arrived and spotted the suspect fleeing on foot. The officer engaged the suspect in a brief foot pursuit and ordered the 48-year-old male to stop.

The suspect was shot once in the leg as he made movements towards an object the officer feared was a weapon, police said.

The suspect was transported to Grant Hospital and is listed in stable condition, Bowersock reported.

The station clerk positively identified the suspect who is charged with one count of robbery. Additional charges could be filed at a later time, according to police.

The involved officer is on administrative leave today.
