NEWARK, Ohio -- A high-school student is recovering from a stab wound after an early-morning fight at Newark High School Friday, NBC 4’s Tacoma Newsome reported.

Apparently, two students fought for a short time around 7:25 a.m. outside of a campus building at Newark high.

“One of the students in the altercation unfortunately did have a knife and cut the other student," said Principal Jesse Truett.

Reportedly, the wound was on the 11th-grade victim’s right-hand side and below the rib cage.

The victim was taken to Licking Memorial Hospital and then to Grant Medical Center by MedFlight.

The suspect, a 10th-grade student, was taken into custody. Now, both police and school officials said they are trying to determine the cause of the stabbing.

“We are not aware of any feud before today,” Truett said.

Police and school officials credit quick-thinking administrators and a cooperative student body with diffusing the situation.

"It was an unfortunate incident. A lot of the students in the morning acted very well as far as, you know, staying out of the way and doing what they need to do. Part of that was our staff that just did an excellent job,” Truett said.

“It's an isolated incident, but it shows how well we can together with a school-resource officer, said Sergeant Barry Connell.

The condition of the victim is not being released currently, and no charges have been filed, Newsome reported.
