SANDUSKY, Ohio -- The closing of a new indoor water park and resort in northern Ohio has a left a lot of people angry.
The owner of Maui Sands Resort shuttered the Sandusky attraction on Thanksgiving Day and announced plans to file for bankruptcy.
The move disrupted a lot of holiday travel plans and forced those with reservations to make last-minute arrangements. About 100 employees were let go without a paycheck. Contractors and companies who have filed nearly $4 million in liens against the resort for unpaid work also could be out of luck.
A Maui Sands spokeswoman says the resort's owners are going to reorganize the business and finish construction on part of the property with hopes of reopening in May.
Spokeswoman Lexi Robinson said the resort struggled financially because it opened in June before some of the hotel rooms were finished. She said that owner Scott Emerson is seeking a way to finance the remaining construction and will talk with contractors about returning.
