Zeke & Happy Owner Reunited

CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ohio -- 7 p.m. Zeke and his owner, Sarah Story, are reunited! Moments after his rescue, the therapy dog tried to go right back into the same drainage pipe. So five days in a pipe might not be so bad!

5:40 p.m.: We just sneaked a peek at Zeke. He's about 450 feet into a drain pipe. He's just sitting there and he's alive.

"I really thought it was a recovery, not a rescue to tell you the truth. He's not out of the hole yet, but chances are pretty good. We've got a pretty competent crew," said Richard Story, Zeke's owner.

4:58: They are moving the backhoe about a quarter mile away and starting to dig. They think they hear him whining.

4:37 p.m.: They're now up to almost 550 feet into the pipe and still no Zeke. They have found dog feces, some dead mice and one dead opossum. They said they'll stay here tonight until they find him.

4:20 p.m.: Rescuers are having trouble getting to the dog because he hears all of the commotion and is a little anxious.

3:01 p.m.: At 190 feet in, they can hear the dog whimpering.

2:28 p.m.: The backhoe has arrived.

A 3-year-old German Shorthair mix who went down into a drain chasing a critter has not been heard barking since Saturday.

NBC 4's Mike Bowersock reported from the scene in St. Paris Wednesday.

Zeke, who is used in a "Paws-To-Read" program in Ft. Wayne, was visiting a home near St. Paris in Champaign County over Thanksgiving when he went into a drain pipe.

Three holes have been dug, but the dog wasn't sighted.

A crew from Dreier and Maller, a Reynoldsburg sewage company, ran a cable and robotic camera down the pipe. The cable has a camera on the end of it and is 1,000 feet long.
