Pets Need Surgery, Surgery Costs Money

COLUMBUS, Ohio—Each year in Central Ohio, dogs turn up homeless, without food and sometimes in pain from injury. These stray pets cross our path and many of us just want to pick them up, hold them and take them home.
NBC 4’s Mikeala Hunt met Sugar and her owner Gail today. Since Gail got Sugar, she has been giving her pain medication three times a day. Gail and her husband Gary took Sugar in after finding her on a local golf course. They took Sugar to a vet and found out she needed surgery on her right rear leg. She continues to try to run and play on the leg, but as the injury gets worse, it will cost thousands to fix…money that the owners don’t have.
Gail has called numerous places to try to get Sugar’s leg fixed, unfortunately, no one will fix her leg until she has been spayed and no one will spay her until her leg is fixed. The Franklin County Dog Shelter hears stories like this all of the time. The shelter tells NBC 4 that while helping a wounded animal is a great act of kindness, it can also pose a danger to the animal’s injury, not to mention the damage it can do to your finances.
The shelter also tells NBC 4, an Ohio law actually holds you responsible for the financial care of a stray dog after keeping it for a certain period of time. The best bet is to take an injured dog in to get mended. If you have any questions or need additional information the number for the Franklin County Dog Shelter is 614-462-4361.
